Position Overview

The Electrical Test Technician is responsible for performing advanced testing on high-voltage electrical equipment to ensure compliance with safety, quality, and industry standards. This role involves conducting a range of low- and high-voltage tests, analyzing results, troubleshooting issues, and maintaining testing facilities. Technicians in this position are expected to develop and maintain expert-level skills in specialized testing processes and support continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform electrical tests on equipment, components, and subassemblies according to established procedures and instructions.

  • Carry out low-voltage and insulation resistance tests such as ratio, Doble, and megger.

  • Conduct high-voltage dielectric tests including impulse, applied voltage, induced voltage, loss measurement, sound testing, and sweep frequency response analysis (SFRA).

  • Test and troubleshoot auxiliary devices and control systems, including control boxes, fan motors, load tap changer (LTC) wiring and functionality, CT wiring, relays, instrumentation, and PLC-based systems.

  • Document and segregate nonconforming materials or test results in accordance with procedures.

  • Assist with troubleshooting failures following established guidelines or under supervision.

  • Calculate and analyze test data to confirm parameters and determine product acceptability.

  • Prepare preliminary and final test reports, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Set up, move, and position equipment and auxiliary devices on and off the test floor.

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the testing area, equipment, and offices in alignment with 5S principles.

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on test equipment and facilities.

  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, planning, and other teams to resolve issues and improve processes.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Strong technical knowledge of testing high-voltage electrical equipment and auxiliary systems.

  • Ability to calculate, interpret, and verify test results against standards and specifications.

  • Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), and PC-based test systems.

  • Familiarity with industry standards such as IEEE and IEC.

  • Understanding of electrical safety rules and the ability to work with very high voltages.

  • Skilled in troubleshooting and problem-solving within established procedures.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for documenting and relaying technical information.

  • Ability to operate test instruments, controls, and related equipment safely and accurately.

  • Comfortable working at heights (up to 30 feet) with fall protection when required.

  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to error-free reporting and data entry.

Education & Experience

Required:

  • Associate's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, High Voltage, Utilities Engineering, Electromagnetics, or a related field; or

  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience in factory or field testing of transformers or comparable high-voltage equipment.

Preferred:

  • Associate's degree in a relevant electrical discipline with experience in testing, servicing, or designing high-voltage equipment.

Work Environment & Physical Demands
  • Testing performed in a manufacturing plant and test floor environment.

  • Requires standing for extended periods, frequent walking, and occasional climbing or working at heights with protective equipment.

  • Involves both precision physical work and detailed data analysis in a fast-paced setting.
