The Technical Specialist 2 - Environmental Conservation / Greenhouse will be responsible for the care and maintenance of lab and field equipment, manage inventory, oversee ordering and budgets, supervision of equipment and supplies, and assist in instruction, demonstrations and student projects. Participates and oversees projects at various off-site locations including field stations. Supervises work-study students and student aides.     • Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Plant Science, or related field required.
    • Experience: Minimum of three years' direct, work-related experience in greenhouse operations, nursery management, and/or public gardens required. Certified pesticide applicator (New York State; Category 3A or 3C) must be obtained within first year of employment.
    • Special Skills: Certified pesticide applicator (New York State; Category 3A or 3C); demonstrated horticultural skills including basic care requirements for a diversity of herbaceous and woody plants, plant propagation techniques (e.g., cuttings, layering, seed, etc.), potting, planting, watering, fertilization, soil/media testing (i.e., EC, nutrient, and pH testing), as well as pest and disease identification and mitigation strategies. Preference is for candidates with said skills and their prior application in relevant work or industry settings.
Specific Responsibilities: Conducts and assists with demonstrations and field techniques in laboratories and classrooms. Provides classroom instruction as needed, with or without the supervision of the course instructor. Supports students with projects requiring the use of field equipment and supplies outside of scheduled class times. Facilitates and supervises student engagement opportunities beyond the classroom setting. Develops and maintains departmental project maps and an online database. Assists students in learning relevant software and applications. Provides training to help students gain practical, industry-relevant skills. Researches and manages the acquisition of equipment and products, including gathering quotes. Contributes to departmental budget planning and maintains accurate inventory records. Serves as a liaison between the department and external businesses or contractors. Oversees student access and usage of departmental equipment and resources. Manages budget line items and processes incoming purchase receipts. Identifies equipment and supply needs, researches options, and obtains cost estimates. Monitors departmental supply levels and orders necessary equipment and materials in a timely manner. Manages the workflow design and use of the following department facilities for faculty and student use: preparatory and work rooms #2655, #2666, #2660 and the Conservation Shop. Performs routine maintenance on heavy equipment such as the sawmill and skid-steer. Cleans and maintains all departmental boats and trailers. Tracks, records, and reports any damaged, lost, or stolen equipment or supplies, and initiates appropriate follow-up actions. Catalogs departmental chemical waste and arranges for proper removal from campus. Maintains and updates Safety Data Sheet (SDS) logs for all department facilities. Manages reservations for college fleet vehicles and reports any mechanical issues, including submitting work orders. Represents the college and department at educational and public outreach events. Ensures departmental compliance with state and federal permits and licenses through diligent record-keeping and reporting. Supervises 5-10 students annually, delegating tasks and overseeing their responsibilities. Participates in public events that highlight various academic disciplines. Pursues and maintains certifications and licenses necessary for departmental operations. Benefits and salary range: Applicants receiving benefits through the New York State Retirement System should review state regulations regarding post-retirement employment. This position is not eligible for employment under a Section 211 waiver.
