Title: Technical Artist

Duration: 2 year contract

Location: Onsite 5 days a week in Redmond, WA

Pay: $65 - 72/hr

Day to day:

A team at a top research company is looking for an experienced and versatile Technical Artist to work closely within the wristband and design team to develop and maintain new AR/VR interaction experiences. The ideal candidate will be someone who likes to learn constantly, dive into new areas with unfamiliar technologies, and embrace the ambiguity of AR/VR problem solving. They will also be someone who likes to collaborate in a team environment across multiple scientific and engineering disciplines, making the architectural tradeoffs required to rapidly deliver software solutions.

  • Create, rig, and refine organic 3D assets (including remeshing, retopologizing, retargeting rigs, optimizing UVs, creating PBRs, and ensuring compatibility with pipeline standards).
  • Improve Unreal Engine 5 environment aesthetics (lighting adjustments and optimization, post-processing enhancement, material and rendering improvements)
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation covering tools, asset creation workflows, and synthetic data pipeline methods for future development
  • Collaborate closely with research, design, and engineering team members to iterate on synthetic data pipeline methodologies and visual asset standards
  • Streamline and optimize 3D asset integration into UE5, supporting the setup and configuration of rigs, materials, and lighting for data pipeline utilization

Must haves:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Digital Arts, Technical Art, Game Design, or similar practical experience.
  • Proven hands-on experience and proficiency with Unreal Engine 5, including extensive work on 3D asset pipelines, rigging, texturing, and lighting.
  • 3-5+ years of professional experience in real-time 3D asset creation, technical art, game development, or a closely related sector.
  • Professional experience in 3D modeling and asset creation software like Maya, Blender, Substance, ZBrush, Houdini, Photoshop, etc.
  • Minimum 3 years developing assets, workflows or plugins for Unreal Engine.
  • Portfolio showcasing technical art—realism-focused asset workflows, rendering and shading techniques, prototype pipeline development, and high-fidelity 3D assets preferred.
  • Deep understanding of game asset creation and management, including mesh modeling, UV unwrapping and mapping, texturing/material setup, rigging, blend shapes, lighting, post-processing, and visual troubleshooting.

Plusses:

  • Experience developing custom tools for UE5 or Digital Content Creation suites (such as Maya, Blender, etc.)
  • Experience creating procedural content in Houdini, Substance Designer, or similar tools - Proficient in using UE5 for importing/configuring 3D rigs, establishing photorealistic lighting setups, and managing material networks
  • Scripting expertise (Python, C++, etc.) for automating key elements of UE5 or DCC workflows
  • Familiarity with version control systems (Git, Perforce, Mercurial) - UI tool development background (React, QT, or similar)
  • Prior work with photogrammetry-driven asset workflows and retargeting or managing skeletons in DCCs
  • Experience with Lumen preferred.
