The Systems Administrator is responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Colleges servers and systems. This role helps develop, plan, and implement projects and initiatives in the areas of systems operations and security. The Systems Administrator serves as a technical resource and works with the Infrastructure Team and others to deliver stable, reliable, flexible systems and services, and to improve everyday tasks and operations that support College processes. The department is maturing its implementation of Agile practices, GitOps, Infrastructure as Code, Automation, Cloud-First, Kanban, and related practices to improve ways of working and reduce toil.

The college server environment is a mixture of Windows and Linux systems (75/25); this position will be responsible for both.

The Systems Administrator must embrace workplace justice, diversity, and inclusion and apply these principles to day-to-day work. This position is remote, with the expectation that staff reside within commuting distance of campus and be available to provide on-campus support as needed.

All remote work arrangements are revocable and may be discontinued by the College at any time and for any reason. These arrangements will be reviewed regularly, and advanced notice will be provided where possible.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure hardware, software, applications, and services are provisioned, monitored, and maintained in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve incidents related to servers and applications.
  • Plan and recommend upgrades to hardware and software.
  • Research, test, and propose new systems, server technologies, and processes to improve the environment.
  • Respond to business-critical emergencies during and after business hours.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues in this College and Columbia University technology departments.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Manage both Windows and Linux systems; comfortable supporting a mixed environment.
Skills, Qualifications & Requirements
  • Proficient in automation and configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible and Jenkins).
  • Strong scripting experience (PowerShell, Bash, and/or Python).
  • Experience with version control tools (Git).
  • Experience with monitoring tools (Icinga, Nagios).
  • Familiarity with automated testing tools (e.g., Selenium).
  • Experience with SAML and OAuth authentication.
  • Linux Systems Administrator: experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, BASH, VMware vSphere.
  • Windows Systems Administrator: experience with Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft SQL Server, VMware vSphere, WSUS.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills; attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and tact.
  • Ability to stay current with emerging technologies and concepts relevant to system administration.
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.
  • Adaptable and able to manage change.
  • Effective interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience with MFA tools.
  • Experience using web services and APIs.
  • Experience with cloud service providers (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Experience with Workday.
  • Experience with cloud data integration tools (e.g., SnapLogic or MuleSoft).
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code, DevOps, immutable servers, LeanIT, and Kanban.
Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent training/experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in computer operations, systems administration, and user support.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in Higher Education.
