  • Minimum of a 2-year degree in Turfgrass Science or a related Agronomy field; a 4-year degree is preferred but not required.
  • Advanced knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass management practices, a working knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices, and methods, and a thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf.
  • 3-5 years of turfgrass management experience.
  • High degree of administrative and executive ability, particularly in problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Proficiency in computer use, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and other relevant applications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of current federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting golf course operations, including employment, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Participation in continuing education opportunities such as seminars, workshops, correspondence courses, field days, and trade shows.
  • Possess or be able to obtain the state / federal / local required pesticide applicator license within 90 days of employment.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and develop a team, with strong interpersonal and coaching skills.
  • Knowledge of financial forecasting and budgeting for golf course operations.
  • Understanding of internal controls and ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Positive attitude and ability to interact well with others in a team environment.
  • GCSAA membership is preferred but not required
  • Actively demonstrates, encourages, trains, and models safety rules and guidelines in accordance with company, OSHA, EPA, DNR, and other state and federal law requirements.
  • Ensures documentation of safety training, meetings and orientation for all employees, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe equipment operation.
  • Investigates loss-producing incidents and reviews prevention recommendations with employees.
  • Conducts and documents safety meetings and training, offering improvement suggestions.
  • Reports safety or hazard concerns and work-related injuries to management.
  • Takes personal responsibility for safety every day.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Leads the construction, maintenance, and renovation of the golf course(s).
  • Oversees the maintenance and repair of construction and golf course maintenance equipment.
  • Renders professional advice, opinions, assistance, and services to the facility's board of directors, general manager, or managing body as required.
  • Participates in all long-range planning meetings to align maintenance with strategic goals.
  • Organizes and executes precise programs for the application of pesticides, fertilizers, and seed, ensuring proper documentation and safe handling/storage.
  • Practices sound agronomic principles to maintain healthy turf and landscapes.
  • Establishes overseeding (where applicable) programs to ensure consistent playing conditions.
  • Scouts the golf course regularly for insect, weed, and disease problems, diagnosing issues and taking corrective action.
  • Assist team with installation of flower beds, shrubs, groundcover, trees, mulch and irrigation components.
  • Performs all jobs in GCM as needed including Agronomy Laborer, Agronomy Equipment Operator, Foreman and all Technician duties.
The golf course superintendent assumes responsibility for managing and maintaining golf course properties, which may include:
  • The golf course(s), including greens, tees, fairways, rough, bunkers, and cart paths.
  • Maintenance equipment and the golf car fleet.
  • Clubhouse grounds, landscaping, and other recreational facilities (e.g., tennis courts, swimming pools).
  • Open spaces, wooded areas, unused acreage, and areas outside the perimeter fence.
  • Sod farm, nursery, or other properties as specified by the supervisor.
  • Construction, renovation, and/or reconstruction of such properties, whether performed by maintenance staff or outside contractors.
  • Supervision and maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems, including pump stations.
  • Acquisition of equipment and purchasing necessary supplies to maintain club properties.
  • Inventory control and oversight of equipment maintenance programs.
  • Prepares and manages annual budgets for maintenance and capital improvements, aligning with long-range plans and defined maintenance standards.
  • Interviews, hires, trains, and supervises staff, with authority to terminate employment, appraise performance, reward, discipline, and resolve issues.
  • Plans all maintenance and project work, applying agronomic and administrative expertise to achieve maintenance standards and long-range goals.
  • Oversees scheduling and routing of personnel and equipment to accomplish work efficiently.
  • Frequently inspects the golf course and related areas to evaluate management standards and implement changes as needed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • 3+ years turf grass management experience required.
  • Advanced knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass management practices with the ability to teach others.
  • A strong business aptitude and passion for the golf business.
  • Current (or ability to obtain) Arizona, Federal, and Gila River Indian Community certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator with 90 days.
