Summary:
The Superintendent is responsible for the successful on-site execution of heavy civil construction projects, overseeing daily operations from planning through completion. This position plays a critical role in coordinating crews, subcontractors, materials, equipment, and schedules while upholding standards for safety, quality, and productivity.
Key Responsibilities:
Project & Field Operations
- Directs daily jobsite operations and supervises field crews, foremen, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- Plans and schedules manpower, equipment, and materials to achieve production goals and meet project deadlines.
- Ensures compliance with project specifications, drawings, and quality standards.
- Maintains accurate project documentation, including daily logs, production reports, and punch lists.
- Coordinates inspections and ensures adherence to all safety and environmental regulations.
- Communicates daily with Project Managers regarding job progress, cost tracking, and schedule updates.
- Sets performance expectations and provides clear direction for foremen and crew members.
Safety & Compliance
- Leads onsite safety culture and ensures adherence to all safety policies and procedures.
- Conducts weekly safety meetings and daily job safety analyses (JSAs).
- Investigates and reports all incidents and near-misses in coordination with the Safety Director.
- Assigns and oversees SWPPP (Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan) compliance.
Leadership & Communication
- Serves as the primary onsite representative of the industry, maintaining professional relationships with clients, inspectors, and vendors.
- Mentors and trains crew members to develop future leaders within the organization.
- Leads with integrity and accountability, aligning with company values and expectations.
- Coordinates with project stakeholders to ensure smooth execution and resolution of conflicts.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Strong leadership and field management experience.
- Proficient in reading blueprints, project specifications, and construction schedules.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and conflict resolution abilities.
- Understanding of safety regulations, quality control, and civil construction best practices.
- Familiarity with construction software such as Heavy Job, Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and other project tracking tools.
- Ability to travel to and work at various job sites in differing weather conditions.
- Physically able to lift up to 100 lbs. and work on uneven terrain for extended periods.
Education & Experience:
- Associate degree in construction management or related field preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of field experience in heavy civil or roadway construction, including supervisory roles.
- 30-Hour OSHA certification and First Aid/CPR training required or willingness to obtain.
- Experience with estimating, production tracking, and cost control is a plus.
