Job Summary:
The Laboratory Shift Supervisor is primarily responsible for the daily laboratory operation and oversight for the specific shift that he or she is assigned. Their technical expertise will serve as a resource to the technologists/technicians and assistants within the department as well as the Physicians, Nurses, and Patients who are our customers. Secondary responsibilities include all Human Resource functions including scheduling, payroll, and performance evaluations, etc if applicable. The Shift Supervisor Position reports directly to the Lab Manager. Key responsibilities of the role include: Managing lab pending and uncollected lists, workload, instrument downtimes, and personnel on shift. Impact of this role in the organization is the smooth and efficient daily operations of their shift in the laboratory.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- Technical Oversight Responsible for all aspects of the laboratory testing performed on their assigned shift, including workflow and quality of the results generated. Assists other technologists, technicians, and support staff with the interpretation of the test requests, results and overall accuracy. Can analyze statistical data such as variance, mean, coefficient of variation, and interpret graphs and charts to ensure accuracy of test data. Coordinates all aspects of quality control and maintains documentation daily. Troubleshoots procedural breakdowns, and equipment malfunctions. May stop production until remedial action is successful in restoring production. May initiate equipment repair and validate functionality. May provide data for restoration of equipment and procedures to all accrediting agencies. Demonstrates technical competence and can perform analysis in area of expertise. Works the bench as assigned.
- Supervision Supervises Technologists, Technicians, and Support Specialists assigned on their shift. Schedules personnel in a fair and equitable manner, while minimizing the use of overtime. Responsible for employee training, coaching, and counseling as required. Performs annual performance evaluations and competency assessments. Maintains employee payroll in a timely manner. Drives employee engagement through effective action planning.
- Performance Improvement and Quality Management Incorporates the philosophy of quality and performance improvement into daily routines. Actively initiates improvements for key quality criteria such as turn around time, accuracy, and sensitivity of test methods. Assists other employees in improving skills and knowledge. Educates peers and subordinates on customer service performance improvement initiatives. Encourages employee involvement and participation. Others constructive feedback.
- Customer Service and Team Performance Maintains a positive impression. Greets everyone and treats customers as guests. Communicates effectively and proactively manages service recovery situations. Serves others from a team-centered approach. Self manages time and resources effectively. Maintains confidentiality and follows all Wellstar policies and procedures.
- General Monitors attendance and punctuality in accordance with system policy. Adheres to dress code and maintains a neat appearance. Wears and displays ID badge while on duty. Willingly performs other duties as assigned. Follows employee conduct expectations as outlined in the Employee Handbook. Performs other duties as assigned Complies with all WellStar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education:
Baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology or related subject Required
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):
All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
- Med Tech ASCP Certification or Cytotechnologist - ASCP or Histotechnician or Amer Medical Tech or Med Technologist (AMT) or Med Lab Scientist (ASCP)
Additional License(s) and Certification(s):
HEW Upon Hire Required and AMT Upon Hire Required and MLS (MT) certification eligible candidates must pass certification within 1-1/2 Yrs Required
Required Minimum Experience:
Minimum 3 years pertinent experience in laboratory medicine with a Bachelors degree Required or Minimum 3 years experience of pertinent experience in laboratory medicine with a Masters degree in laboratory medicine. Required and Supervisory experience Preferred
