Position Overview

HDR is seeking a Substation Business Class Leader to join our growing and nationally ranked Power Delivery team.

The Substation Business Class Leader will oversee the execution of technical aspects and deliverables of assigned projects. This role requires a competent engineer capable of managing projects from basic to moderate complexity, supporting the growth of the Substation team, and providing technical mentorship. Responsibilities include coordinating quality control reviews, working with client managers and the national business class to develop technical expertise, and attending training to stay current with complex discipline concepts. The leader may also develop technical papers or presentations for industry events.

This position demands a self-motivated individual who can work independently, mentor team members, and establish strong client relationships by understanding their business objectives. Building local teams or leveraging existing staff to deliver world-class service is essential. The leader will also manage individual projects within their technical expertise.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and grow HDR's Power Delivery services portfolio in North Carolina.
  • Manage key projects, including technical staff and sub-consultants, to meet delivery needs and exceed expectations.
  • Participate in marketing efforts, client development, and communication to maximize satisfaction and growth.
  • Collaborate with local and regional teams to build capabilities through recruitment and training.
  • Develop technical papers and presentations showcasing HDR's capabilities.
  • Ensure quality control in accordance with HDR policies.
  • Plan and manage all aspects of substation projects, coordinating workload and resources.
  • Track financial aspects of projects, ensuring completion within schedule and budget.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience in staff supervision (preferred).
    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
    • Design experience with high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects up to 500kV, including P&C design and familiarity with IEEE ANSI standards.
    • Proficiency with industry-standard design software (AutoCAD and/or MicroStation).
    • Ability to travel less than 10%.
    • Active engagement in professional or industry groups to enhance HDR's expertise.
    • Local candidates preferred.
    Required Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree in a related field (Engineering, Architecture, etc.).
    • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
    • Commitment to quality, improvement, and HDR values.
    • Professional registration and related technical experience.
    • Experience in team development and management.
    • Ability to collaborate with other leaders and teams.
