Position Summary :
Reporting to the Director of Advising, Student Support Counselors (SSC) serve as the primary point of contact for students, providing student-centered support services. SSCs deliver high-quality student services to promote retention, satisfaction, and success. They must adhere to all internal policies, as well as federal, Department of Education, and affiliate regulations. The role involves extensive and meaningful student contact, maintaining accurate records to support students throughout their programs. Team members are expected to exercise a high level of responsibility and independent judgment, working hours that accommodate the campus student population, including evenings and occasional weekends.
Note : Must reside within commuting distance to one of our locations: Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Anaheim, or San Diego.
Principle Duties :
Support new and returning students at various stages of their education.Manage advising services, including registration, evaluation of program requirements, handling incomplete grades, monitoring student activity, Satisfactory Academic Progress, and overall degree progress.Contact students regularly throughout the term to ensure coursework completion and provide support.Respond promptly to calls and emails from students, offering guidance on coursework, policies, and available support services.Maintain accurate and current academic records by processing important forms such as Add/Drop, Withdrawal, Leave of Absence, etc., in a timely manner.Coordinate campus accommodations by reviewing documentation and collaborating with relevant departments to ensure eligible students receive appropriate support in accordance with ADA and other laws.Advise at-risk students on work/life balance, time management, and other circumstances to facilitate successful course and program completion.Act as a liaison for specific sub-departments within Student Support Services, such as international student services, ADA accommodations, or military student support.Guide students on course and program content, and assist with registration processes.Follow up on academic plans, especially for students not meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress or requiring additional support.Collaborate with departments like Academics, Financial Aid, Admissions, and Student Accounts to support student success.Coordinate with the Office of the Registrar to ensure students receive timely information regarding policies, registration, and graduation.Inform students about available support services and resources.Adhere to all internal, federal, DOE, and affiliate policies, maintaining integrity and ethical standards.Perform additional duties as assigned.Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
- Proficiency in PC applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and clerical tasks (phone skills, typing, filing).
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with students across all educational levels and with staff at all levels.
- Excellent teamwork skills.
Position Qualifications :
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Experience in student-facing roles or higher education preferred.
