NOLA Public Schools VisionThe vision of the NOLA Public Schools is that every student receives a high-quality education that fosters their individual capabilities, while ensuring that they thrive, achieve physical and mental wellness, and are prepared for civic, social, and economic success.Position SummaryThe Attendance Hearing Officer is responsible for conducting formal hearings related to student attendance matters, ensuring due process, reviewing documentation regarding attendance interventions and outreach, facilitating conferences between schools, parents, and involved parties, and issuing recommendations or rulings in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and regulations. In addition, the role includes participating in trainings and outreach activities with the Hearing Office and Re-Engagement Team.The Attendance Hearing Officer reports to the Executive Director of Student Discipline and Behavior Support. The position is based at the Office of Student Discipline and Behavior Support and will require the Attendance Hearing Officer to conduct training and participate in outreach activities in the community, the Family Resource Centers, the Orleans Parish School Board Central Office, and at school sites.Salary Range: $65,400 to $99,735 a yearEssential Duties And Responsibilities
- Conduct attendance hearings for students who are chronically absent or withdrawn from school
- Review case files, attendance records, and supporting documentation prior to the hearing
- Ensure timely entry of documentation in electronic data systems and ensure student files are up to date at all times
- Effectively facilitate conversations between families and school representatives to determine appropriate resolutions and next steps to improve student attendance
- Ensure all parties are knowledgeable about the attendance laws and guidance as it relates to NOLA-PS and their respective assigned school
- Advise families, schools, charter organizations, and advocacy partners on best practices and centralized policies regarding school attendance in compliance with state law
- Assess students and families for referrals to outside agencies or internal supportive services to provide assistance in alleviating barriers to school attendance
- Act as a resource to school administrators and other pertinent school-based staff regarding attendance programs, interpretation of attendance policies/laws, and record-keeping requirements
- Provide consultations and trainings to school staff to increase schools' capacity to intervene and resolve issues with students presenting attendance, behavioral health, and homelessness matters
- Verify that chronically absent students are enrolled in the Orleans Parish public school system and placed in accordance with the NOLA-PS Enrollment Policy
- Conduct city-wide training for school leaders and staff members off-site at school campuses and/or community centers as needed regarding school attendance
- Participate in in-depth training on evidence-based solutions to address school attendance and engagement
- Participate in community outreach and efforts to build and enhance community support for school attendance
- Establish new partnerships and strengthen preexisting relationships with organizations to mitigate barriers to school attendance
- Participate in drafting district policy regarding attendance and in drafting the Attendance Hearing Office Manual
- Participate in and explore innovative approaches to working with students who are chronically absent, alongside community partners, to improve school attendance
- Perform other duties as assigned
Educational Background
- Bachelor's degree required.Masters preferred in social work, counseling, education, law or another related field.
- At least five (5) years relevant work experience as a principal, assistant principal, social worker, teacher, or other similar position.
Other Knowledge, Skills Or Abilities Required
- Working knowledge in restorative approaches and ability to utilize restorative approaches and peer mediation
- Minimum of three years of experience working with children, adolescents, and families
- Knowledge of community resources and counseling/social work practices with high-risk populations
- Comprehensive understanding of the current citywide decentralized school structure, including experience working with charter schools
- General knowledge of SPED policies and related state and federal law related to attendance, behavior, and academics as required
- Exceptional understanding of all applicable laws and regulations governing school attendance
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills, conflict resolution skills, and experience facilitating groups
- Possess knowledge of trauma-informed mediation strategies/skills and critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Possess the comfort to navigate and diffuse emotionally overwhelming situations
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Exceptional time management and scheduling skills
- Ability to work independently with strong sense of focus, task-oriented, nonjudgmental, open personal qualities, and clear sense of boundaries
- Ability to work in a variety of settings with culturally diverse families and communities, with the ability to be culturally sensitive and appropriate
- A strong sense of and respect for confidentiality involving both clients and fellow employees

Performance EvaluationThe employee will be evaluated based on the above position using either two methods: via COMPASS or a NOLA-PS evaluating instrument.
