About the Work Unit This position works in the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Section 6 Maintenance Unit in Craig, CO. The unit exists to maintain the Colorado Department of Transportation highway system and facilities to as near original conditions as constructed utilizing available resources, personnel, equipment and material to ensure a safe roadway for the traveling public. About the Position This journey level Equipment Mechanic (Shop Mechanic) position inspects, diagnoses, troubleshoots, modifies, and repairs light and heavy trucks and specialized snow, ice, and road repair equipment to preserve and assure the entire fleet of equipment is in safe operating condition following the rules and policies of the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic diagnoses, services and repairs various systems that are found on pieces of heavy equipment such as transmissions, brake systems, electrical systems, ignition systems, fuel systems, and hydraulic systems. Vehicles and equipment include, but are not limited to, 10-ton tandem snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines, 6X6 and 4X4 trucks, snowblowers, and mower tractors with mower decks towed behind and sidearm. This position will be required to obtain a Colorado Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Type A or B with no restrictions on air brakes within 90 days of hire as a condition of employment.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Diagnose and repair vehicle and equipment malfunctions on all major systems including gas and diesel engines; transmissions; differentials; drivelines; generators; brakes; rear-end assemblies; carburetors; tires and wheels; hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, AVL, and cooling systems; and computer-controlled sanders and liquid de-icing systems;
  • Diagnose equipment components for defects or malfunctions, utilizing a wide range of testing equipment;
  • Work on vehicles and equipment such as 3.5-ton single axle and 10-ton tandem axle, tractor-trailers, front end loaders, motor graders, asphalt paving machines, and 15' mower tractors;
  • Diagnose, repair, rebuild, and overhaul systems and parts;
  • Order and procure parts, supplies, and materials to keep equipment functional;
  • Responsible for maintaining records and creation of reports pertaining to repair and maintenance of all equipment utilizing appropriate software;
  • Design and fabricate equipment such as mounting brackets, special tooling, and other small fabrication projects;
  • Design and fabricate parts and special tools needed for unique or emergency situations by machining; arc welding and oxygen-acteylene cutting and welding; plasma cutting; and MIG and TIG welding;
  • Fabricate, modify, and install special equipment or replacement parts using mills, lathes, welders, torch sets, plasma cutters, and metal cutting saws;
  • Perform routine maintenance checks, inspections, and adjustments on such things as fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, and clutches; change filters and oil; and lubricate vehicles and motor-driven equipment;
  • Maintain service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and equipment;
  • Complete annual DOT safety inspections on the vehicle fleet and certify vehicles for 49 CFR 396 DOT compliance;
  • Perform record keeping and documentation on all assigned units, track equipment maintenance, and keep Federal DOT Inspection records on all equipment;
  • Process equipment notifications and annual and emissions inspections;
  • Continuously learn and develop job knowledge and skills through on-the-job training and training courses both online and in person;
  • Maintain technical knowledge of equipment, tools, and materials, and adapt to any changes, updates, and any technology improvements or changes;
  • Instruct operators in the use and care of vehicles and equipment;
  • Keep tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition;
  • Maintain current knowledge of and abide by all safety laws, regulations, policies, and procedures and wear all required personal protective equipment;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment: Expected work schedule is 4, 10-hour days Work time is primarily in the equipment shop but may include some field work Required to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays Some on-call time is required Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where he/she can be reached for the purpose of responding to an emergency Required to lift up to 70 lbs. Required to bend, kneel, climb in/out of trucks when maintaining and repairing equipment Required to operate CDOT vehicles Must be able to read, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions Frequent travel during the workday to attend training and meetings Required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time hot and cold Exposure to loud noises Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin Exposure to High Voltage (anything over 600V) and electrical shock Must be able to hear and communicate via cell phone and state radio to relay information and respond to field calls Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Experience Only: Four years of progressively responsible experience in automotive AND heavy equipment repair, that includes at least ONE year of experience with diagnosis and repair of heavy diesel equipment such as 10-ton double axle snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines and/or 15' mower tractors, with current proficiency at the journey level. Substitution: Satisfactory completion of a formalized apprenticeship program, or higher level non-correspondence coursework from an accredited college or technical school, beyond high school, in automotive and diesel equipment mechanics or heavy equipment mechanics may be substituted for the required general experience. Unofficial transcripts or a copy of your certificate of completion are required if substituting this education for experience and must be uploaded within your online application.
