The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute's (OSUCCC-James) mission is to improve health in Ohio and across the world through innovation in research, education, and patient care. The team provides patient care and supportive services directed towards achievement of positive patient care outcomes, maximizing the patient's involvement in their own plan of care, and reducing the length of hospitalization, the staff nurse plays a critical role in staff engagement, the patient experience, quality and safety, and cost-effective care.
Position SummaryThe Staff Nurse is responsible for managing and providing care to the patient and their family, and for directing and supervising nursing care provided by other members of the patient care team. The Staff Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, coordinating, delegating, and evaluating the nursing care of patients in alignment with the professional practice model.
Minimum Education Required2-Year College Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience with a Major in nursing
Additional Education DesiredBachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience with a Major in nursing
Required QualificationsDegree in Nursing from a CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) or Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) accredited nursing program required. Current Ohio license or interim permit. Experience in relevant care setting preferred.
Additional Information:The James Observation Unit provides targeted, short-term care for patients who need additional treatment or monitoring beyond initial evaluation in the Emergency Department or Immediate Care Center. It also receives direct admissions for patients who require close observation but whose conditions do not warrant full inpatient status.
Serving a lower-acuity population, the unit focuses on efficient management with the goal of safely discharging patients within 48 hours. This allows for careful clinical oversight while avoiding unnecessary hospital stays.
The Observation Unit operates at a steady pace that emphasizes continuity of care and detailed monitoring. Nurses develop strong assessment skills and collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams to support smooth transitions and optimize patient outcomes. By streamlining care pathways and reducing inpatient admissions, the unit ensures patients receive the appropriate level of care at the right time, all within a supportive and focused nursing environment.
