The RN assesses patient needs, develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and coordinates care delivery throughout the patient's episode. The Med/Surg RN develops specialized skills in the area of cardiac care including telemetry monitoring. The RN is accountable for patient and family education to assist the patient and family in understanding self-care beyond hospitalization, including lifestyle changes to support health and healing. He/She promotes comfort and provides emotional support in a healing environment. The RN applies nursing knowledge and skill in the delivery of care by assessing patient and family needs through active listening and social perceptiveness. They analyze data and information obtained through direct observation, assessment, technology, or health team communication. The RN creates a developmentally and age-appropriate, culturally relevant, individualized plan of care to address the nature and scope of the identified health problems. In collaboration with the patient, family, physician, and health care team members, the RN sets goals and monitors the patient's progress. The RN adjusts the plan based on patient response, changes in condition, or reprioritization of needs. The RN promotes, advocates for, and protects the health, safety, and rights of the patient. They systematically evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and use results of quality improvement activities to initiate changes in individual nursing practice. The RN demonstrates skill in application of nursing interventions, including medication administration.
