Sr Principal Engineer - System Planning

Location: NY Rochester / NY Brewster

Salary Range: $132,000 to $165,069

Work Type: Office

Job Summary

The Sr Principal Engineer - System Planning can work independently and is a technical leader in the Integrated System Planning group who directs, oversees, and mentors other planning engineers and key projects and programs in the department. This position is expected to develop internal staff, collaborate across organizations, and lead external contractor resources across a wide range of activities (interconnection studies, engineering & design, etc.). Proactively identify and perform special projects & studies that innovatively solve unique & complex problems with a broad impact to the business. Participates and represents Avangrid on numerous working groups and associations and actively participants in regulatory proceedings as a subject matter expert for the Company. Leads and supports significant business initiatives across all Integrated System Planning.

Required Qualifications

  • BSEE /Degree in Electrical Engineering required. Candidates from other engineering disciplines may be considered depending on relevant work experience.
  • An advanced degree, such as an MBA or MSEE, is required. 15 years of experience and working knowledge in the electric utility industry with the ability to demonstrate strong leadership skills.
  • Practical Engineering Experience/Application: System Planning, Systems Operations, Engineering Design, Construction (e.g. field experience, standardization, developing the business case and defending in front of stakeholders)
  • Knowledge of Regulatory and Compliance Environment: Local, State and Federal Regulatory Standards and Requirements (NERC, NPCC, ISO, PUC, etc.)
  • Power System Studies - Knowledge & Interpretation of Study Assumptions and Results (e.g., Transmission and Distribution Area Studies, Power Flow, PSCAD, Transient Stability, DER, Voltage, Contingency, Power Factor Correction, Short Circuit, Reliability, Capacity, etc.)
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively articulate complex concepts to various stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) License is strongly preferred.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification is preferred.
