Senior Pharmaceutical Packaging Designer

Conducts all activities concerned with the design, development and implementation of secondary and tertiary packaging containers by performing the following duties:

The following is a list of minimum responsibilities related to the Senior Pharmaceutical Packaging Designer position. Other duties may also be assigned.

  • Review design request paperwork and customer packaging/product specifications with account executives.
  • Provide all design related information to estimating in a timely manner to facilitate the estimate process.
  • Advise account executives and/or customers on efficient packaging procedures and innovations in packaging or materials.
  • Develop computer generated designs and specifications along with color graphic prototype samples for account executives to present to customers for approval.
  • Coordinate with engineering, production and/or estimating on any unusual design projects to determine the solution that best suits both sharp's capabilities and the customers' requirements.
  • Work with engineering staff to develop a system for coordinating drawings/files showing required areas for 2d/serialization and lot/expiration areas.
  • Investigate state-of-the-art design hardware, software, materials, and machinery in order to keep sharp design capabilities current with industry standards.
  • Work with vendors on the development of client materials/packing concepts.
  • Perform pre- and post-production quality checks.
  • Continuously maintain spec guide that references processes, standards and information on existing packaging equipment at sharp, such as serialization area parameters. Spec guide to be referenced during the packaging design and development process.
  • Train new hires and interns on department processes and software like strata 3d, artioscad, and on the use of design lab equipment such as kongsberg plotter/cutter, heat sealing machine, etc.
  • Work alongside various engineering departments to ensure initial designs will work properly on sharp machinery.
  • Use and continually develop leadership skills.
  • Attend conferences and training as required to maintain proficiency.

May directly supervise 1 to 3 design employees. Responsible for training packaging designers and interns as needed. Must be able to carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in industrial design or package design from two-year or four-year college or university is preferred; or at least three to five years related and documented experience and/or training in a related area; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with cGMP packaging & medical packaging a plus.
  • Must have experience in artioscad, solidworks, tops, or similar structural design software.
