Overview

Substation Engineer required to join a collaborative engineering culture in Orange and Rockland Engineering. The role offers broad, diverse experience managing projects of varying sizes, providing opportunities for learning and professional challenge.

Senior Engineer: Under limited supervision from the Principal Senior Electrical Engineer or Section Manager of Transmission and Substation Engineering, performs electrical engineering work within the substation engineering discipline. Responsibilities include designing and applying utility-grade substation systems for transmission and distribution, supporting operations, and representing the company at industry meetings.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Develop a customer-centric approach, fostering trust and confidence among internal and external stakeholders.
  • Design substation layouts, review drawings, specify equipment and labor for projects, and prepare sketches for design guides.
  • Perform preliminary cost estimates for feasibility studies, analyze and report on project designs, and perform technical calculations such as ampacity, grounding, battery sizing, lightning protection, and insulation coordination.
  • Conduct field walks, support construction phases, and keep project and budget updates current.
  • Stay informed of industry standards (IEEE, ANSI, NESC) and regulatory requirements (NERC/FERC).
  • Participate in the company's Emergency Response Plan during storm assignments and other related tasks as needed.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) and at least 8 years of relevant engineering or operational experience in substation engineering.
Relevant Work Experience
  • Minimum 1 year of substation design experience.
  • Knowledge of substation layout and major equipment, including breakers, switches, and steel structures.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and schematics.
  • Strong communication, analytical, technical, and computer skills.
  • Good judgment, initiative, creativity, and decision-making abilities.
  • Proficiency with IEEE/ANSI standards and the National Electrical Safety Code.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License required.
  • PE license preferred; candidates should be in the process of obtaining or already hold a NY, NJ, or PA PE license.
  • PMP certification preferred or in progress.
Additional Physical Demands
  • Respond to emergency situations and perform storm assignments as required.
  • Willingness to travel within the service territory as needed.
