SPECIALIST, WORKFORCE AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Reports to: Program Manager, Youth Development

Classifications: Exempt, F.T. (YSD)

The Workforce and Youth Development Specialist is responsible for guiding and supporting HMI members (LGBTQIA+ youth, ages 13-24 years) through career development, workforce readiness, and personal growth opportunities. Alongside the JRT Coordinator, this role will facilitate access to resources, provide mentorship, and foster skill-building initiatives to empower individuals to achieve their goals in education, employment, and life skills.

Workforce and Youth Development Services

1. Workforce Development

o Serve as a primary point of contact for HMI members and staff to support with workforce and youth development resources, including community partners, job offerings, training opportunities, and other efforts needed to meet the needs and goals of HMI members.

o Locate, collaborate, and mobilize with community employers as resources to identify job placement and internship opportunities for participants.

o Support with scheduling and facilitating partnering agencies, corporations, and other partners for youth

o Facilitate workshops on job search strategies, resume writing, interview preparation, and workplace skills.

o Conduct and lead 6-8 week internship cycles reflective of the workforce needs of LGBTQIA+ youth

o Connect participants to appropriate resources, services, and programs in education, training, and employment.

o Assist with the coordination of workforce and youth development acitivity logistics for fairs, workshops, and activities including:

1. identifying and procuring job activities @ HMI, identifying space, date, and time

2. ensuring attendance data is captured in Salesforce and shared with data team

3. dissemination of relevant materials pre and post events

o Partner with community agencies to conduct externship, job placement, and necessary skill-building services (i.e. Maven Youth, Mt Sinai, Google, etc)

o Monitor participant progress and provide ongoing support to ensure success in job placements.

2. Youth Development

o Recruit and engage participants throughout NYC to participate in Workforce and youth development efforts.

o Develop and implement programs that build leadership, life skills, and self-efficacy.

o Plan and lead activities that promote community engagement and personal growth.

o Address barriers to success by connecting participants with counseling, housing, or other support services.

o Maintain client-level data, including follow-up notes and referral logs.

3. Outreach and Collaboration

o Build partnerships with schools, community organizations, and local businesses to expand opportunities for youth.

o Conduct and share consistent, monthly worforce and youth development communication, such as a newsletter

o Serve as a liaison between HMI and the community at-large to bridge and promote a broad menu of programming and support services; represent the organization at community events, job fairs, and other relevant forums.

o Maintain a database of resources, referrals, and program outcomes.

Programmatic Direct Service

Work closely with other HMI departments and staff to support ongoing programs and services

1. Outreach and engage youth during Program Common Hours (3:30pm – 7:30pm).

2. Prepare for and facilitate weekly ad-hoc group-based activities for general programming, as needed.

3. Perform general staff duties, such as Café duty, general event set-up/breakdown, etc.

4. Participate and assist with general HMI agency-wide events.

Administrative & Other Duties

Track youth member enrollment/activities and contractual requirements, and prepare reports and paperwork requested as needed by agency or funders.

1. Maintain client-level data, including follow-up notes and referral logs.

2. Maintain group-level documentation, including sign-in sheets and session summaries in Salesforce

3. Document, code, and enter data for program analysis.

4. Submit all necessary documentation to Data Coordinator(s).

Participate in professional development trainings

As needed

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, counseling,health education, public health, or related human services field.
  • Experience navigating community networks and engaging in partner efforts to expand economic opportunities for youth
  • Experience facilitating group discussions and managing a variety of small and large group dynamics.
  • Experience planning and implementing workforce development programs.
  • At least two years experience working with at-risk adolescent and LGBTQ populations, as well as diverse youth populations in an urban setting from various cultures, intersections, and backgrounds.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment when appropriate; strong decision-making skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer Skills: Strong with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook; familiarity with Salesforce, Microsoft Teams, spreadsheet/database applications.
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish-English) skills a plus.

Working Conditions:

  • Work at 2 Astor Place, NYC
  • Standard Hours are Mon – Fri, 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM, with an hour lunch break; occasional schedule changes for outreach work and events.
