Job Summary

Caltech Optical Observatories (COO) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Associate Software Engineer within its Optical and Infrared (OIR) Instrumentation Group. The OIR Group develops advanced astronomical adaptive optics systems, imaging cameras, and spectrographs for observatories including Palomar, Keck, and the Thirty Meter Telescope, supporting Caltech faculty and astrophysics research.

The candidate should have a proven record of developing software for sophisticated astronomical or physics instrumentation and contribute effectively to cross-disciplinary teams. They should possess broad software knowledge, stay informed of scientific and industry trends, and collaborate closely with project leaders, faculty, and peers.

Essential Job Duties
  • Develop and manage data analysis pipelines for instruments.
  • Perform software development tasks including requirements engineering, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Engage with project managers, engineering staff, faculty, and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in reviews and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Collaborate with team members and adhere to policies and regulations.
Candidate Qualities

  • Strong technical knowledge and communication skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing conditions.
Basic Qualifications
  • B.S. in a related field with at least 4 years of experience, or equivalent.
  • Expertise in software engineering processes and programming languages like Python and C++.
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs.
  • Work at high altitudes and in low light conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • M.S. with 6+ years of experience or equivalent.
  • Successful track record in research instrumentation.
Additional Information
