Job Description

Clinical/Administrative Responsibilities:

The major role of the Social Worker/Child Crisis Specialist within the Department of Psychiatry is to function as a member of the Behavioral health team responsible for the assessment and determination of the level of services needed by the child/family and following through with referrals for those services. This responsibility may include any, but is not limited to any of the following:

Conducts an initial psychiatric screening/mental status exam to determine the appropriateness of admission to inpatient services or the need for lower-intensity services and formulating a plan of care.

Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary Child Psychiatry and Pediatric Emergency Department Teams

Facilitates transitions from high intensity ER services to clinic services when necessary to assure continuity of care and reduce need for rehospitalization or future ER visits

Works with Family to identify available resources and supports

Provides short-term Crisis Intervention and/or short-term

therapeutic interventions with patient and family as well as follow-up to families while awaiting longer term therapy referrals

Educates family and patient about the child's illness/behavioral challenges and makes treatment

recommendations and facilitates linkages to a broad range of mental health, community, and school-based services

Provides follow-up with treatment providers and patient's family with regard to adherence to CCS's recommendations

May interview and assess patients in or from the Peds ED, when appropriate to facilitate warm handoff to ongoing CCS follow-up or community referrals.

Works with child and family on initial contact to engage them while providing initial therapeutic interventions to motivate and encourage engagement in aftercare/ongoing treatment

Is responsible for data collection and the maintaining and reporting of information on the patient/families seen and outreach, contacts, and referrals made.

Provides assistance and supervision to less experienced Social workers in the program as well as to assigned social work and psychology interns.

Minimum Qualifications

For Assignment to Level II

1. Valid license as an LMSW issued by the NYSED; or

2. Valid license as an LCSW issued by the NYSED.

Special Note:

All new appointments to Levels III-V require a NYS-issued Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) license effective October 18, 2021.
