Smoke-free NYCHA Liaison - New York City, NY : Job Details

THIS IS A TEMPORARY GRANT FUNDED POSITION

The New York City Housing Authority's division of Resident Services, Partnerships & Initiatives (RSPI) engages and connects NYCHA residents to critical programs, services, and the priorities within the Authority's strategic plan to preserve New York City's public housing.

RSPI's Department of Resident Health Initiatives (RHI) builds health and advances health equity through innovation and cross-system collaboration that connects residents to preventive health resources, helps create healthier indoor environments, and cultivates resident leadership in health. The Department's portfolio of work includes Smoke-Free NYCHA, Farms at NYCHA, Healthy Start @ NYCHA, community health worker initiatives and other health care partnerships, and strategic public health collaboration with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Based in the Department of Resident Health Initiatives, Smoke-Free NYCHA is designed to create healthier homes for residents and healthier working environments for employees by reducing exposure to secondhand smoke and providing support to residents and employees who smoke and want to quit. The new policy took effect in July 2018, consistent with the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Smoke-Free Public Housing Rule.

Reporting to the Smoke-Free NYCHA Senior Liaison, the Smoke-Free NYCHA Liaison will serve as a community health worker that acts to connect NYCHA residents who want to quit to available support. The Liaison will also serve as part of a team working to promote adherence to NYCHA's smoke-free policy.

The Smoke-Free Liaison's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Provide evidence-based education on the harms of tobacco use and benefits of a smoke-free environment.

2. Serve as a liaison between residents and others on the Smoke-Free NYCHA team. Establish and cultivate relationships with local stakeholders in targeted developments to support Smoke-Free NYCHA goals.

3. Engage NYCHA residents who are current tobacco users in cessation services and wellness resources.

4. Collect data on and document all resident outreach and cessation outcomes in appropriate databases. Complete appropriate documentation of assessments and educational sessions at program intervals using determined collection method.

5. Assist during resident events, such as family days, and health promotion events such as World No Tobacco Day and the Great American Smoke Out, to promote cessation services and adherence to the smoke-free policy. These events may occur during weekends and/or evening hours.

6. Assist in the design of community engagement protocols and strategies to promote awareness of and adherence to the smoke-free policy.

7. Assist in compiling program metrics related to this engagement.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualification Requirements

1. High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to duties described above; or

2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to 1 above.

Preferred Skills

1. Excellent communication skills, comfort communicating with NYCHA residents and other stakeholders. 2. Current NYCHA resident or significant knowledge of and experience with NYC's public housing communities. 3. Bilingual, English/Spanish and other languages spoken widely among NYCHA's resident population. 4. Ability to travel via public transportation to developments across NYCHA's portfolio citywide. Must be comfortable working onsite at various NYCHA developments.
