Job Summary:
The Occupational Therapist performs professional work in the field of occupational therapy by functionally evaluating the patient and planning and utilizing a program of purposeful activities to develop or maintain adaptive skills designed to achieve maximum physical and cognitive functioning of the patient in his or her daily life tasks. The Occupational Therapist assists in the rehabilitation of the patient by providing treatment plans and exercises designed to aid the patient's physical function and/or cognitive response.
Responsibilities:
Plans and conducts medically prescribed occupational therapy programs in a hospital/rehab setting.
Instructs and educates patient in activities of daily living such as the basic skills of eating, dressing, bathing, writing and the use of adapted equipment and prosthesis.
Consults with other members of the rehabilitation team to select an activity program consistent with the needs and capabilities of each patient and to coordinate the occupational therapy activities with those of the other therapeutic services, such as physical therapy.
Plans and executes therapeutic exercises and skill drills, including perceptual training;
Administers specific treatment for the restoration of physical function to increase joint motion, muscle strength, manual dexterity and coordination;
Designs and fits, under direct supervision and following a medical prescription, non-complex splints, braces and adaptive devices;
Maintains accurate patient records and statistics and productivity standards required by the department.
Competently and successfully treat in all areas of hospital including all mobility and treatments in ICU
Ability to independently problem solve and reprioritize as additional patients are added to the caseload
Ability to manage and articulate clinical concerns professionally to challenging staff and family members
Appropriate escalation to Supervisors and Director as appropriate
Performs 1- 2 in-services/case study for staff per year, on topic of interest
Successfully mentoring of 1 full time student per year
Mentoring newer staff formally and informally
Demonstrates greater than the minimum 36 credits of continuing education credit within a 3-year period
Evidence of lecturing to outside disciplines (nursing lectures, team meetings, etc.)
Demonstrate an additional administrative role/responsibility within the department (scheduling, etc.)
Successful completion and ownership of performance improvement project for the department
Consistently meets and exceeds productivity expectations
Does related work as required.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Experience:
3 plus years of experience treating patients in an acute care hospital / acute rehab facility/ outpatient therapy setting, required. Internal applicants should be in good standing within the Rehabilitation department including above ratings on the annual performance appraisal and strong attendance record.
Education:
Must be a graduate from an accredited Occupational Therapy Program with a Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Therapy, required. Master's degree, preferred.
Licenses / Certifications:
Must possess license and current registration issued by the New York State Education Department as an Occupational Therapist.
Other:
Good knowledge of technique and practices of occupational therapy; good knowledge of the equipment adaptive devices and utilization of same; familiarity with the techniques, ability to motivate patients toward their highest level of functioning; ability to instruct patients in therapeutic activities; ability to plan, lay out and implement activities designed to achieve the maximum amount of recovery from patients in their projects/activities; ability to determine a patients functional abilities and limitations; ability to record observations and data; ability to write clear, concise and appropriate progress notes; ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position; ability to work well with others; ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments; good judgment; manual dexterity; resourcefulness; creativity; emotional stability and maturity; initiative; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
