NYCSBUS (New York City School Bus Umbrella Services Inc.) is a not-for-profit corporation that provides school bus transportation services to New York City public and private school students, the majority of whom have Individual Education Plans. It operates approximately 800 school bus routes with a staff of approximately 1,800 people from six locations with a budget of $190 million. NYSCBUS' goal is to radically improve student bus transportation by innovating in all areas and by providing unprecedented transparency in bus operations to school districts that outsource this service. Reporting to the Senior Human Resources Manager, the Sr. Human Resources Generalist is responsible for overall HR administration and compliance. Labor relations is a key focus area for the person in this position. Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide support to NYCSBUS employees in various HR-related topics such as leaves and compensation and resolve any issues that may arise.
  • Provide support in dealing with complex/sensitive employee related investigations.
  • Manage employee grievances and discipline processes.
  • Promote HR programs to create an efficient and conflict-free workplace.
  • Ensure compliance with collective bargaining or other agreements and employment policies.
  • Train supervisors on labor relations and other policies and procedures.
  • Assist in development and implementation of HR policies.
  • Assist in talent acquisition and recruitment processes.
  • Ensure timely and accurate data entry into various HR related systems, such as the HRIS
  • Gather and analyze data with useful HR metrics, like time to hire and employee turnover rates.
  • Maintain both paper and electronic employee records in compliance with state and federal requirements.
Education and/or Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years Human Resources Generalist experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certifications for Human Resource Professionals (SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR) is strongly preferred.
Qualifications
  • Proven experience as an HR Generalist with a thorough understanding of Human Resources practices, policies and procedures.
  • Solid labor relations experience, including: interpreting and understanding collective bargaining agreements; conducting union hearings; working with supervisors to manage the needs of bargaining unit members.
  • Proficient with Google Apps and other related software.
  • Experience with HRIS software systems.
  • Proficient English language verbal and written communication skills. The ability to communicate in Spanish is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
Physical and other Requirements
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, working on a computer, and answering phone calls.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Ability to travel to all NYCSBUS locations.
  • Must be able to work safely in conditions where noise, moving machinery, exposure to dust, fumes and/or gas may be present.
  • May be assigned shifts that fall outside of normally scheduled hours.
  • During busy seasons such as the opening of the fall and summer school season, may be required to work longer than normally scheduled hours and might be assigned to depots other than the one they were hired for.
