We take pride in being an urban campus with a small town feel. Job Description: SUNY Schenectady County Community College seeks a full-time Senior General Mechanic in their Facilities Department. This is a competitive **provisional civil service position. Employees in this class perform miscellaneous building maintenance and repair tasks relating to skilled and unskilled work projects. General supervision is received from a higher level employee with some leeway granted in the performance of assignments. Immediate supervision may be exercised over the work of one or more general mechanics, utility workers, custodians, laborers, or other similar types of employees. Does related work as required. Typical Work Activities:
- Repairs and refinishes desks, tables, chairs, and other types of furniture;
- Cleans and paints walls, woodwork, and floors;
- Inspects, installs and replaces HVAC equipment;
- Replaces worn pipes and valves;
- Repairs and installs plumbing fixtures;
- Repairs and installs locks, sets lock cylinders, changes lock combinations, opens jammed locks;
- Maintains lock and key record systems;
- Make keys;
- Remove and repair locking mechanisms from doors;
- Replace, and/or repair tumblers, levers, springs for specific locks;
- Adjust tumblers and levers as necessary;
- Replaces light bulbs, fuses, ballasts, electrical fixtures, and makes minor electrical repairs, and installations as needed;
- Repairs and directs subordinates in repair of battery and/or gas powered maintenance equipment; Estimates materials needed on an ongoing basis;
- Clears snow, and spreads rock salt, on sidewalks, driveways and parking lots;
- Consolidates maintenance and cleaning supplies;
- Maintains running inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies;
- Checks supplies against purchase orders to determine that supplies conform to orders;
- Performs a variety of related duties as required.
Requirements: Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics: Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions of two or more standard trades; ability to interpret plans, specifications, and rough sketches; ability to perform complex oral and written instructions; ability to outline the work of self and supervise subordinate employees; mechanical aptitude. Minimum Qualifications: Three (3) years of experience involving at least two (2) of the following trades, one (1) in which the applicant must have obtained journeyman status: plumbing, electrical, locksmith, carpentry, small engine repair, masonry/bricklaying or a closely related field, which shall have involved supervisory or lead worker experience. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid New York State Driver's license at the time of appointment and must maintain such licenses throughout the duration of appointment Note: The essential functions of this job are determined by the department/jurisdiction where the job is located. ** Provisional appointments may be made to positions in the competitive class if no list of eligible candidates exists.
