Senior Director of Accessibility

The Senior Director of Accessibility will be assigned to the New York City Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) and will serve as MOPD's in-house expert and main point of contact on matters relating to physical accessibility.

Job duties will include:

  • Serve as in-house expert for MOPD on physical accessibility issues.
  • Coordinate with other City agencies, including but not limited to DOT, DOB, DDC, EDC, and SBS, on identifying issues related to physical accessibility and developing strategies to address such issues.
  • Handle requests for waivers under NYC BC Section 1101.3.5.
  • Handle requests for MOPD approval of DOT grants of revocable consent under Chapter 7 of NYCDOT's rules.
  • Review plans concerning waterfront properties for accessibility issues and report findings to SBS or EDC, as appropriate.
  • Perform inspections and other tasks related to accessibility of restaurants participating in the Open Restaurants Program and other inspections as needed.
  • Represent MOPD on code committees and task forces, as needed.
  • Provide technical expertise in the development of MOPD trainings on physical accessibility and participate in such trainings.
  • Handle other projects related to physical accessibility as identified by MOPD leadership.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, business administration, or public administration, and five years of full-time satisfactory experience in planning, administering, or expediting engineering design and/or construction, or coordinating a very large engineering project, two years of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, executive, or supervisory capacity.
    • Or a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and nine years of relevant experience, with two years in an administrative, managerial, or supervisory role.
    • Education and/or experience equivalent to the above. An accredited Master's degree, law degree, or a valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer, Registered Architect, or Landscape Architect may substitute for one year of experience, but all candidates must have at least two years of managerial or supervisory experience.

    Preferred Skills

    • Knowledge of NYC Construction Codes (Administrative Code, Building Code, Electrical Code, Mechanical Code, Plumbing Code, Fuel Gas Code, Energy Code).
    • Knowledge of ICC ANSI A117.1 (Technical Accessibility Standards).
    • Familiarity with Local Law 58 of 1987 and NYC Zoning Resolution.
    • Ability and motivation to advocate for accessibility.
    • Creative thinking and proactive issue identification.
    • Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
    • Organizational skills, attention to detail, and deadline management.
    • Plan Review experience.
    • Expertise in ADA Standards of Accessible Design, Fair Housing Act Guidelines, UFAS, Architectural Barriers Act, and Universal Design is preferred but not required.
