The ACLU seeks a Senior Director, Human Resources to join the senior leadership team of the HR department at our National Office. This strategic leader will oversee Total Rewards, Policy, HRIS, and Administration, including benefits, compensation, compliance, HR data analytics, and internal budget/procurement processes.

The Senior Director ensures these functions advance the ACLU's mission while fostering a culture of equity, inclusion, and operational excellence. This role reports to the Chief Human Resources Officer and manages a team of 4–5 staff. Approximately 67% of our employees are represented by two labor unions, requiring thoughtful partnership and collaboration.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Internal Operations

  • Lead and manage teams overseeing benefits, compensation, policy, compliance, HRIS, and data analytics.
  • Build operational systems that drive efficiency, accountability, and compliance with labor laws and regulations.
  • Partner with senior leadership as a trusted advisor, ensuring HR practices are grounded in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Oversee a $10M benefits and wellness budget, including planning, vendor management, and compliance.
  • Manage the HR department budget, internal procurement processes, and financial reporting.
  • Serve as strategic partner to the CHRO on department-wide initiatives.
  • Act as principal in-house expert on retirement and benefits programs, including a defined benefit pension plan and multiple retirement plans (~$175M assets, ~2,000 participants).
  • Oversee compensation program analysis to ensure equity and consistency.
  • Evaluate and enhance benefits annually, using benchmarking and industry trends to maintain a competitive total rewards portfolio.
  • Provide guidance to affiliates nationwide on benefits and compliance matters.
  • Oversee telework/remote policy and manage external temporary staffing processes.

Compensation, HRIS & Administration

  • Manage classification and compensation processes for ~600 positions, including position management and job review.
  • Provide workforce planning and headcount analysis during budget cycles.
  • Oversee HRIS management and data analytics to ensure accuracy and strategic insights.
  • Negotiate and manage vendor contracts and procurement processes.
  • Ensure internal financial controls and audit compliance.

Compliance & Employee Relations

  • Lead compliance efforts related to benefits, labor law, and HR administration, including filings with IRS, DOL, and other agencies.
  • Partner on employee relations matters tied to compensation, benefits, policy, and data analytics.
  • Manage and prepare confidential personnel data and analyses for sensitive matters.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned HR leader with a strategic, inclusive, and solutions-focused approach. While no candidate will have every qualification, the strongest candidates will have:

  • Substantial, progressive HR leadership experience in total rewards, benefits administration, budget, and procurement.
  • Expertise in compliance, HR data analytics, and compensation structures.
  • Success driving organizational change and managing complex projects and teams.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to influence across a diverse organization.
  • Sound judgment, diplomacy, and a collaborative leadership style.
  • Commitment to embedding equity, inclusion, and belonging in all work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PHR/SPHR or related certifications.
  • Advanced degree in HR, Business, or related field.
  • Experience managing geographically dispersed teams and working in mission-driven or advocacy settings.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, HRIS databases, and HCM systems.

Compensation

The annual salary for this position is $242,314 (Level C1), based on New York City rates. Salaries are regionally adjusted for approved remote locations. See our geographic pay structure for details.
