The Opportunity

We are urgently seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to join the automation team at this pioneering facility. This individual contributor role focuses on developing and implementing automation solutions that optimize the scale-up of drug manufacturing processes while ensuring safety, compliance, and operational flexibility.

You will be a key technical expert responsible for delivering high-profile projects, collaborating cross-functionally, and influencing technical decisions at the site and network levels. This role requires hands-on leadership, innovation, and a strong ability to work through complexity and uncertainty in a fast-growing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead design, development, and implementation of automation systems to enable drug manufacturing scale-up
  • Ensure automation systems comply with safety standards and data integrity requirements
  • Develop and maintain highly automated, flexible equipment and digital plant initiatives for process and batch data visibility
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners to integrate automation into the broader site strategy
  • Support testing, deployment, and troubleshooting of new technologies and automated workflows
  • Provide training and expert support for automated instruments and software
  • Influence technical decisions and promote best practices within the organization
  • Mentor and coach technical talent within the automation function

Ideal Profile

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or STEM field with 15+ years of relevant automation experience, OR Master's degree with 12+ years of experience
  • Proven expertise with DeltaV and Rockwell automation control systems
  • Strong programming skills and experience with Atlassian tools
  • Familiarity with smaller standalone lab automation systems (e.g., Echo, Kingfisher, Mantis)
  • Experience designing and maintaining automation in pharmaceutical manufacturing environments
  • Recognized technical leader with a track record of influencing complex technical projects
  • Excellent organizational skills and experience with laboratory information management systems (e.g., Benchling, Signals)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic environment
  • Relocation to the Indianapolis area is required; relocation support is available
