- Develop and maintain a positive rapport with students, staff, families, and community.
- Facilitate education programs for students by making presentations to students regarding issues of drugs, including alcohol and tobacco.
- Serves as a member of any applicable advisory boards in the school if requested.
- Assist in supervising co-curricular events.
- Make presentations to community audiences concerning risk factors in our community.
- Assist Fond du Lac Ojibwe School administration with serious student violations which are also violations of laws. (i.e. alcohol, drugs, assaults, weapons, traffic).
- Works in collaboration with school staff and the Director of Law Enforcement to address needs, trainings, and lesson plans.
- Refer families and high-risk students to appropriate community resources.
- Work closely with school counselors, assist in the identification of pre-delinquent children, and attempt to strengthen protective factors be referring youth to appropriate prevention resources.
- Assist school staff members and families when appropriate in understanding the juvenile court system, law enforcement ramifications, and the techniques of court referrals.
- Become involved in school and outside youth activities in order to understand special problems of youth and how they may be positively addressed.
- Advise and inform school staff on issues relating to delinquency happening on school property which they may be aware of.
- Collect and maintain data for the continuous evaluation process.
- Operate under the direct administration and supervision of Fond du Lac Law Enforcement.
- Conduct preliminary investigations, complete initial incident reports as necessary, and process assigned cases. The cases may involve the following responsibilities:
- Interview complainants, witnesses, victims, and subjects and taking statements when necessary.
- Collect and preserve evidence and provide for its identification and analysis.
- Complete written reports
- Work in cooperation with the Ojibwe School administration along with federal, tribal and local agencies on matters of community concern.
- Take enforcement action when necessary. The officer will be armed and carry handcuffs at all times.
- Make referral to the appropriate community agency when the officer receives information or observes the condition that jeopardizes the welfare of students.
- Be available as a resource person for law enforcement and juvenile court procedures. He/She will be in a position with the schools to develop a better understanding and have additional pertinent information for juvenile court determinations.
- Serve as a deterrent to recidivism by establishing close association in the school and in community with youth who have committed a delinquent act.
- Comply with and knowledge of the Student Bill of Rights. 25 C.F.R. Part 42.
- May be required to work as a patrol officer as assigned to include but not limited to school closures and other law enforcement needs.
- Establishes and maintains community relations and policing by attending school and community events and interacts with the community members.
- Department uniform is required and provided to the employee, which must be worn during scheduled work hours unless prior arrangements have been made with management.
- Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
- Ensures confidentiality of financial records and all records for employees and/or clients.
- Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.
- Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
- Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.
- Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies.
- Maintains a clean and organized work area.
- Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.
Qualifications Educational and Experience
- Valid Driver's License issued in the US is required.
- Eligibility determined by FDL's insurance company.
- One year demonstrated experience as a Law Enforcement Officer is required. Experience as a School Resource Officer is preferred.
- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- Possess a valid license for Peace Officer in the State of Minnesota; or
- Have the status of eligible to be licensed as defined by the Minnesota P.O.S.T. Board; or
- Have completed basic requirements in another state and be considered eligible by the Minnesota P.O.S.T. Board; or
- Be considered an exception to all of the above options and eligible by the Minnesota P.O.S. T, Board; or
- Be certified by the United States Indian Police Academy, Basic Police Training Program.
- School Resource Certification is required; if not certified at the time of hire must become certified within 1 year of hire. Employment is contingent upon this requirement and must maintain certification for the duration of employment.
