Program: Suffolk | 685 Brookhaven Avenue, Bellport, NY 11713 What You'll Do As School District Liaison at our Suffolk family shelter, you'll coordinate with school districts that serve the children living at the shelter to assist families with registering their children for school and ensuring that parents are aware of their children's education rights. Working in partnership with the designated homeless liaisons identified by each school district, you'll help to ensure that all children are receiving appropriate education while living in emergency housing. Your responsibilities will include:
- Meet with families upon intake to complete STAC forms and establish school district eligibility.
- Assist families with the school registration process.
- Create/update school sign-out forms.
- Coordinate busing for after-school programs from various school districts.
- Track attendance for all school-age children & work with onsite staff to address attendance concerns.
- Maintain ongoing contact with homeless liaisons for each district.
- Establish contact with School Social Workers, Psychologists, and Guidance Counselors.
- Ensure that both HELP Suffolk and school districts are addressing the children's educational and mental health needs.
- Attend scheduled meetings with school Principals and the Superintendent, disciplinary hearings, and facilitate parent-teacher conferences.
- Assist parents with preparing children for various school trips and activities.
- Follow up on children's educational progress and assist parents with creating a plan for those who are struggling with academics (i.e., tutoring).
- Work in conjunction with schools when an emergency occurs.
- Conduct educational workshops for parents so that they are better prepared to meet their children's educational needs.
- Coordinate and recruit volunteers to assist with onsite educational programs.
- Assist in the set-up and coordination of summer school.
You're a great fit for this role if you have:
- Bachelor's degree in education or a related field, OR equivalent experience and skills.
- Knowledge and understanding of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.
- Knowledge and understanding of team concepts.
- Prior experience in case management, educational administration, counseling, and crisis intervention preferred.
- Computer literacy, particularly with Microsoft Office applications.
