Position rides the back of the truck and manually lifts waste and recycling containers, emptying contents into the truck; screens out items that cannot be picked up and providing/leaving explanation for homeowner. Position also watches for traffic, directs traffic around the truck as needed, and assists with washing and cleaning the truck. Position will also perform other duties as assigned such as assisting with snow removal, loading salt, ice and spreaders, various maintenance duties, special events, and other duties in other areas of the department on an as needed basis. Examples of Duties
- Rides the rear loader packer trash truck and picks up and throws garbage/trash into rear of truck; screens out trash that cannot be picked up and explains to homeowner if available or tells the driver who writes and leaves a tag with explanation.
- Rides in pickup truck and picks up bagged leaves and piles of brush, throwing into the truck.
- Watches for traffic, directs traffic around the truck as needed, rides on outside of the truck, and assists with washing and cleaning the truck.
- During snow or high wind situations assists with loading salt, ice and spreaders; puts chains on tires; cleans sidewalks downtown; removes tree limbs and other debris.
- Assists with special events and festivals; removes trash; assists with clean up and replacing trash boxes.
- Follows relevant safety practices and procedures in equipment operation.
- Performs related duties as required.
QualificationsAbility to read and write and to perform heavy manual labor tasks involved in sanitation collection; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of safety regulations and procedures involved in riding a sanitation truck and pickup truck.
- Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other co-workers, superiors and the general public.
- Ability to respond courteously to citizens.
- Ability to perform heavy manual lifting and related duties.
