Rotordynamics and Control Engineer – Active Magnetic Bearings
Sapphire is looking for a rotordynamics and controls engineer to join the Magnetic Bearing Technology group with primary responsibilities to include rotor dynamics analysis/testing, controller tuning, data acquisition system setup and troubleshooting, prototype machine testing, software development/testing, and field support. Special consideration will be given to those with a background in rotordynamics, vibrations, controls, electromagnetics, and/or mechatronics. The ideal candidate will possess leadership/teamwork skills, a positive attitude, and a willingness to listen to and learn from others.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the following satisfactorily; other duties may be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
- Perform rotordynamic modelling in tools such as XLROTOR and Matlab suite of rotordynamics and controls analysis tools.
- Use Matlab to analyze stability and performance of magnetic bearing control system loops, and to design compensators that ensure robust performance.
- Conduct final tuning on the control algorithms based on transfer function measurement, sensor signal time history and power spectrum – in the shop and in the field.
- Participate in design of new magnetic bearing systems for new applications/machines.
- Develop/Modify Labview-based magnetic bearing graphic user interface (GUI).
- Develop and conduct training sessions with field service engineers, test engineers, and technicians.
- Interface with internal and external customers, as required, for field service/applications/product support.
QualificationsEducation/Experience
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and ability required.
- Masters or PhD in ME or EE required.
- Minimum of 3 years related experience in dynamics and/or controls required.
- Knowledge of dynamics or controls analysis, especially for rotating machinery (rotordynamics) required.
- Understanding of control algorithm design (frequency domain analysis) for closed-loop control systems a plus.
- Knowledge of data acquisition systems and instrumentation a plus.
- Familiarity with magnetic bearing controller hardware components (DSP controller, PWM amplifiers, and power supplies) a plus.
- Understanding of magnetic bearing principles and applications a plus.
- Experience with machine-level magnetic bearing system testing and troubleshooting a plus.
- Knowledge of turbomachinery used in aerospace and/or defense industries a plus.
Intangibles Sought
- Ability to multi-task.
- Willingness to listen to and learn from others.
Supervisory Responsibilities
None. Position will interface with field service engineers, test engineers, and technicians during production training/troubleshooting activities. Strong teamwork/leadership skills required.
Physical Demands / Work Environment
Work split between office, on-site test lab, and field support activities. Must be willing to travel to support field support activities up to 10% of the time. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs preferred.
