Description: Required NICU experience is essential. Neonates are primarily admitted from labor and delivery. The NICU patient population ranges from as early as 23 weeks gestation to 4 months. The NICU responds to neonatal emergencies by providing assessment and immediate care to newborns post-delivery. The unit attends all C-sections and high-risk deliveries. Conditions treated may include extreme prematurity, respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, hypoglycemia, congenital anomalies, seizures, and meconium aspiration syndrome. Services provided include non-invasive nasal CPAP, mechanical ventilation, including High Frequency Oscillation and nitric oxide inhalation therapy. Nurses assist in performing bedside procedures such as peripheral IV insertion, septic workups, intubations, and catheter insertions. They also administer parenteral therapy, blood products, bronchopulmonary hygiene, and medications. Nurses monitor vital signs and provide parent education. Most diagnostic services are performed at the bedside.
