The Respiratory Therapist will provide professional respiratory care services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), focusing on preventing disease, promoting respiratory health, and maintaining clinical stability. This role supports a person-centered, interdisciplinary approach to healthcare and contributes to the safety and wellness of service users in a residential setting. Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Deliver approved respiratory therapy services to all assigned service users in accordance with physician orders and regulatory standards.
  • Assess, monitor, and evaluate service users' respiratory needs; provide interventions and modify care plans as needed.
  • Maintain clear and timely documentation in medical records, including respiratory assessments, treatments, and equipment use.
  • Communicate changes in service user conditions to nursing staff, the Director of Respiratory, and other team members.
  • Administer respiratory treatments and medications as prescribed, and train staff on proper administration when applicable.
  • Lead and support interdisciplinary team meetings by providing updates on respiratory conditions and recommendations.
  • Maintain and monitor respiratory equipment and supplies, ensuring availability and proper functionality.
  • Provide training and education to staff, families, and service users on respiratory care practices and emergency protocols.
  • Support workers' compensation efforts by addressing respiratory health as part of injury prevention and care management.
  • Participate in quality assurance and facility assessments (e.g., Mealtime, Environmental, Interaction, and Third Shift Assessments).
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area and ensure proper infection control procedures are followed.
  • Support crisis management efforts and provide calm, professional care during emergencies.
  • May access and appropriately handle protected health information (PHI) in compliance with HIPAA.
Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program
  • Active Respiratory Care Practitioner license in the state of North Carolina (required)
  • Minimum two (2) years of respiratory therapy experience preferred; experience with IDD populations is a plus
Other Duties:
  • Demonstrates flexibility and commitment to meeting unit needs.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • This position may or may not have supervisor responsibilities depending on the job profile.

  • Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision.
