JOB PURPOSE: The Division of Urogynecology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Howard

University College of Medicine is seeking a passionate and skilled Research Scientist. The purpose of

this position is to support and expand grant-related research efforts focused on women's health, pelvic

floor disorders, health outcomes, qualitative research, and implementation science. This position offers

an exciting opportunity to contribute to a growing research portfolio that addresses disparities in

gynecologic care and promotes real-world improvements in health outcomes for underserved

populations. This position reports to the Division Chief of Urogynecology.

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY: Responsible for providing limited supervision for one or more functions within

a division. Formally plans, assigns, directs, and coordinates the work of these functions. Typically,

responsible for performing some non-supervisory duties in addition to supervisory responsibilities. May

perform staff evaluations and make recommendations regarding pay and/or performance.

NATURE AND SCOPE: Internal contacts include administrators, faculty, staff and students both

within the Division/Department and University-wide. External contacts include government agencies,

community partners, scientific collaborators, vendors, visitors, and the general public.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Design, implement, and evaluate research projects in women's health, with a focus on pelvic health, health services, surgical and non-surgical outcomes, and community impact.
  • Apply expertise in qualitative research and implementation science to explore barriers to care, enhance health system delivery, and inform best practices.
  • Collaborate with faculty in the Division of Urogynecology and Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology to build and sustain a robust research program aligned with the Division/Department strategic priorities.
  • Support grant writing, data analysis, and dissemination through academic publications, presentations, and policy briefs.
  • Engage with local community partners, patients, and healthcare stakeholders to co-develop equitable and culturally informed research initiatives.
  • Develop, implement approved Division/Department policies and procedures in the pursuit/support of research projects.
  • Perform specialized functions, including monitoring and tracking of center/department computational research resource usage, coordination and monitoring of scheduled user access to center/department computational research resources, provide advisement to faculty concerning project execution, monitor overall center/department computational research operation and recommend operational changes, as needed.
  • Recommend additional equipment, software, and resources for the Urogynecology Division. Make presentations and conduct and facilitate workshops on center resources and capabilities.
  • Prepare ad hoc reports on status of projects for the Division Chief.
  • Confer with and advise staff, students and faculty to provide technical advice, problem solving assistance, and center/department policy information answers to questions in pursuit of user research projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

CORE COMPETENCIES:

  • Skills in Office Microsoft, SAS, SPSS, and other analytic software to perform appropriate analyses.
  • Experience with surveys and data tracking using REDCap or similar systems and data analyses.
  • Applied experience using dissemination and implementation science frameworks such as Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance (RE-AIM) Practical Implementation Sustainability Model (PRISM), and Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) to guide the integration of evidence-based interventions in real-world settings.
  • Experience working in academic medical centers or with clinical research teams.
  • Familiarity with pelvic floor disorders, urogynecology, or health services clinical translation research, qualitative research, and implementation science.
  • Experience in preparing grant applications and reports.
  • Track record of contributing to peer-reviewed publications and/or funded research.
  • Commitment to advancing health equity, particularly among Black women and other underserved populations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relations with faculty, staff, students and external entities.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work with others.
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

PhD, ScD, DrPH, or equivalent degree in public health, epidemiology, implementation of science, or a

related field. 2–5 years of research experience post-degree (postdoctoral or equivalent). 12 years of

related work experience may be substituted in lieu of research experience. Demonstrated expertise in

qualitative research and/or implementation science methodologies. Experience conducting research

related to women's health, health disparities, or gynecologic care. Strong written and verbal

communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
