About Basis

Basis is a nonprofit applied AI research organization with two goals:

  • Understand and build intelligence. This involves establishing the mathematical principles of reasoning, learning, decision-making, understanding, and explaining, and creating software that embodies these principles.
  • Advance society's ability to solve intractable problems. This aims to expand the scale, complexity, and breadth of problems we can solve today and accelerate future problem-solving capabilities.
  • To achieve these, we are building a new technological foundation inspired by human reasoning and a collaborative organization that prioritizes human value.

    About the Role

Research engineers support Basis' mission by translating research ideas into correct, robust, and scalable high-quality code. We seek individuals who excel technically, value probing concepts, and are willing to explore radically different ideas.

Basis is collaborative internally and with external partners; we seek individuals who enjoy working with others on large challenges.

This role targets experts in machine learning engineering, including:

    • Probabilistic programming and statistical inference
    • Deep learning
    • Program synthesis and analysis
    • ML Ops and systems engineering

These areas are within the context of building reasoning systems, engaging with topics like programming language design, automatic differentiation, and SAT/SMT solvers.

    Qualifications

    • Proven ability to drive software projects from start to finish, evidenced by open-source projects, reports, or publications.
    • Comfort with research from PL and/or ML venues such as PLDI, POPL, NeurIPS, ICML.
    • Ability to work autonomously and under uncertainty.
    • Enthusiasm for solving real-world problems and societal impact.
    • Significant technical achievements in ML engineering, such as implementing new techniques, building large-scale training systems, or spanning multiple levels of the programming stack.

Advantages include a PhD or equivalent in statistics, programming languages, machine learning, neuroscience, cognitive science, physics, or mathematics.

    Responsibilities
    • Translate research ideas into correct, robust, and scalable code.
    • Performance engineering and scaling research code.
    • Algorithm development.
    • Contribute to Basis's culture and direction.
    • (Optional) Publish and present research findings.
    Role Details
    • This is a full-time position.
    • Flexible working hours with a preference for in-person collaboration; attendance at multi-day Basis events required.
    • Location in New York City or Boston.
    • Competitive salary and bonuses.
