Research Coordinator

Organization's Summary Statement: The Research Coordinator for the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park works with Principal Investigators (PIs) through the development, submission, award, execution, and close out of sponsored projects. The Coordinator advises faculty on all elements and procedures required for proposal preparation, development, and submission and on appropriate expenditures, award specific terms, and regulations. The Coordinator also obtains and follows solicitation instructions for the preparation of the proposals and prepares proposal budgets, gathers information to support the proposed costs, and completes all required sponsor cost proposal forms. The A. Physical Demands: Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must be able to traverse to other buildings and departments on campus. Repetitive motion in arms/hands/fingers. Substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers plus visual acuity for computer use and extensive reading. May sit in front of computer monitor for extended periods of time.

Preferences:

  • Work experience in higher education.
  • Two years' experience in research administration (i.e. proposal preparation, post-award administration).
  • A minimum of six months of experience with proposal preparation and/or administration at a research university.
  • Specialized training/certification in research administration such as the University of Maryland's Research Administration Certification Program or a similar program.
  • Skills applying basic analytical skills to review expenditures and revenues, prepare forecasts, and reconcile accounts.
  • Skills in analyzing Request for Proposal (RFP), solicitations, and budget preparation.
  • Solid foundation of payroll procedures and processes as it relates to research budgeting and expenditures.
  • Working knowledge with various software tools and/or systems such as Kuali Financial System, Kuali Research, BA4, etc.
  • Proficiency with , FASTLANE/, NIH, DOD, and/or DOE submissions.
  • Knowledge of federal grant compliance and award management guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: One (1) year of experience coordinating or facilitating research projects.

Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of research methodologies related to historically marginalized groups, ensuring culturally responsive and ethical study practices.
  • Knowledge of program management and administration, including coordinating research projects, tracking timelines, and managing budgets or grant funding.
  • Skill in oral and written communication for preparing research reports, presenting findings, and engaging with diverse stakeholders.
  • Skill in using Microsoft Office products for data management, document preparation, and analysis to support research activities.
  • Ability to interpret and apply research-related policies, procedures, regulations, and ethical guidelines to ensure compliance with institutional and legal standards.
  • Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to participant engagement, customer service, and sensitivity to culturally and ethnically diverse communities.
