About the job Register of Deeds Clerk The Lyon County Register of Deeds seeking a full-time Clerk I.This is a non-exempt position, with amazing benefits, and career opportunities! Salary begins at $17.50 per hour.The employee serving in this position performs administrative/clerical duties of the office of Register of Deeds including: attending the public counter, comparing, filing, and certifying land record documents, and assisting the public with related questions. This employee will serve as a Passport Acceptance Agent and must be eligible for and able to successfully complete Passport Acceptance Agent training. This position has frequent contact with the public and other County departments.Candidates are required to have two years of general office/clerical experience and a high school diploma (or equivalent), with additional qualifications in secretarial studies helpful. Candidates must have strong verbal and written communication skills and should be familiar with office management procedures, basic accounting principles, and Microsoft Office.   • I. JOB SUMMARY: This is a non-exempt position*. Performs administrative/clerical duties of the office of Register of Deeds.
  • The roles, responsibilities, job functions, knowledge, skills and abilities set forth herein may be revised from time-to-time in order to comply with federal and state laws, departmental needs and the changing requirements for this position.
  • II. Essential Functions:
  • Attend the public counter, answering questions about real estate and/or accepting legal documents for recording. This duty may require record searches and exhibiting property ownership as well as collecting fees to record documents.Comparison and certification of the land record documents against the scanned image.Service land records by arranging papers in accordance with appropriate books and in the proper chronological sequence followed by typing in the correct place. The results of this process must be checked by the Register of Deeds or their designee.Make sure documents are mailed back to the right person.Communicate in person or by telephone with the public regarding recorded instruments, how to record, fees, names on deeds, etc. Provide legal descriptions to realtors, attorneys, and commercial appraisers. This requires the use of the computer and/or numerical index.Genealogy researchers and helping the general public is expected of this employee as needed. (PRN) Everyone works on indexing/scanning and proof reading as time permits.This position requires a friendly and courteous attitude.Must be able to successfully complete Passport Acceptance Agent training and receive/produce documentation making them eligible to become an acceptance agent.Must be punctual and have regular & reliable attendance.

  • IV. QUALIFICATIONS
  • EXPERIENCE: Two years of general office/clerical experience desirable. Experience in bookkeeping and data processing is desirable. Persons in this position are expected to have acquired sufficient knowledge and experience to be performing at a competent level after twelve months on the job.EDUCATION: High school diploma, G. E. D. or equivalent are required. Qualifications in secretarial studies will be an advantage.KNOWLEDGE: Acquire knowledge of statutory requirements pertaining to the office of Register of Deeds. Must have knowledge of general office procedures. Must have ability to receive, understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Must have excellent organizational and follow up skills. Required to read, write and speak English fluently with the ability to speak a foreign language desirable. Excellent knowledge of MS Office, Excel, Outlook and office management software. Familiarity with office management procedures and basic accounting principles.SKILLS: Operate a typewriter, copier, reader-printer, fax machine, scanner and computer. Excellent organizational and leadership skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to handle multiple priorities in an effective manner.

  • Physical Requirements: Frequent requirements to store and retrieve books weighing up to thirty (30) pounds, extending from floor level to 84 inches in height. Requires sufficient visual acuity to read, write and operate office equipment. Requires sufficient hearing level to be able to deal with the public and communicate with others directly or by telephone.
