Recycling Program Generalist I

Energetic professional who doesnt mind wearing multiple hats. Experienced in handling a wide range of operational and administrative tasks that support related duties and able to work independently with little or no supervision. This position focuses a majority, but not exclusively, of the time working and assisting the weight master at the scale house. Is responsible for the operations of the programs at the regional transfer station. This includes accepting the following items: MSW, C&D, yard waste, plastics, food waste, tin/aluminum, cardboard, paper, new paper, magazines, glass, white products, tires, etc. This position will be able to work and fill in at all positions including HHW. The individual will also serve in a positive public relations role for the District with the general public, local schools and civic groups, other solid waste districts and other governmental entities in answering inquiries and providing information, consistent with state law.

Supervision Received: The Recycling Program Generalist I receives direct supervision from the Waste Reduction Program Manager and indirect supervision from the District Manager. Supervision Provided: None.

Evaluation: Employee Worker performance will be evaluated at least annually by the respective Supervisor.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Administrative: Opens the main administrative office by 7:00 a.m. Operates and maintains the truck scales at the main office. Answering the telephone and responding to general inquiries. Operate a cash draw/register without errors. Assist customers in obtaining an annual permit to use the transfer station. The point of sales attendant will be the initial contact for customers. He/She will visually verify permit type and number before items can be disposed of. Accepting sales for services, making change, cashing out, preparing, and making daily bank deposits and completing daily reports.
  • Performs general maintenance as needed (i.e. shovel and/or sweep sidewalks and scales as required seasonally, painting, raking, etc.).
  • Keep work areas cleaned, sanitized, and organized. Close and secure your immediate work area and the transfer station at the end of day.
  • General Recycling: Assist in the operations at the recycling center. Fill in when the recycling center operator is absent. Assist customer drop offs of recyclables, MSW, cardboard, glass, food waste, computer and e-cycles, tires, metal, and other items. Assist customers by educating them in what is needed for each program. Manage vehicle and customer traffic in a safe and orderly manner. Weigh recyclables and record number, as needed. Assist in receiving payment for services. And cashing out at end of day. Transport recyclables to vendors, document results in logbook Visually inspect the truck for damage and required scheduled service. If capable, do general maintenance and repairs to trucks and equipment Return paperwork and other relevant items to the office.
  • Scales: Assist in the operations of the scale house. Fill in when the scale house operator is absent. Assist customer drop offs of recyclables, MSW, cardboard, glass, food waste, computer and e-cycles, tires, white products, and other items. Assist customers by educating them in what is needed for each recyclable. Manage vehicle and customer traffic in a safe and orderly manner. Visually inspect vehicles and trailers for contents for proper charges are applied. Ensure wood, concrete, etc., items are clean and without contaminants. Visually inspect district vehicles and equipment for damage and follow up on required scheduled service or repairs. If capable, assist in general maintenance and repairs to trucks and equipment.
