This position will lead City wide recreation programs for older adult 50+ in the Southeast region of Seattle. This position will report to the Recreation Program Coordinator. Job Responsibilities Primary duties: Provides quality recreational opportunities for people 50 and older. This position works within the citywide Lifelong Recreation Unit, a group made up of 6 Recreation Specialists overseeing different sections of program within the unit. Positions in the class work under general supervision to provide recreational programming to include fitness, arts, educational and social opportunities to adults aged 50+. This work requires knowledge of the principles and practices of planning, organizing and supervising group social and recreational activities designed to meet the needs of aging adults. The ability to plan, schedule, supervise and evaluate the work of hired instructors, communicate clearly verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner; and to make presentations and speak before groups in also required. Work as a member of the Lifelong Recreation Unit to deliver citywide programs and events. Partner with community center staff to coordinate programs in facilities in a particular geo-sector. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships across the department for internal and external customer service. Follow established departmental and City guidelines, policies and procedures, however, judgement is used in a selecting and applying the most appropriate guidelines. Personal contact is primarily with individuals or groups to assess the need for and provide recreational programs and with staff and community agencies to coordinate program implementation.
- Plans, organizes and conducts specific recreation programs, field trips, special events for people 50+.
- Consults with supervisor and recreation specialists to interpret programs and provide assistance and guidance.
- Assigns and monitors the work of Recreation Leaders, volunteers and hired instructors. Some positions may supervise the work of subordinate staff.
- Use existing tools to prepare budgets for program area; and monitor budget expenditures as needed.
- Recommends new recreation programs; create course content for quarterly brochure and coordinates the implementation of programs.
- Works with the Business Service Center to register program participants, process refunds, and comply with computer security policies.
- Disseminate program information to individuals, groups and the general public; and meets with neighborhood and community groups to plan for special events and identify recreation program needs.
- Plans and conducts in-service training for subordinate staff and volunteers.
- Arranges for the use of other facilities for recreation programs and special events; and recruits instructors for programs.
- Maintains records and prepares reports on program activities, invoices, attendance forms, work orders and registration.
- Markets programs, create media releases, fliers and other promotional materials for program; and submits to supervisor for review.
- Purchases and maintains program supplies and equipment.
- Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Requires one year experience coordinating recreation programs and a Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Recreation Administration, Physical Education or related field (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class). License, Certification and Other Requirements
- Current Washington State driver's license.
- First Aid and CPR Certificate within six months of hire.
- May be required to work evenings and weekends.
Additional Information Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:
- Experience working with older adults in a recreational setting.
- One or more years experience in planning, implementing, and leading recreation programs for older adults.
- The ability to work independently and in a team setting, self motivated and creative in program development.
- One year of experience working with staff and volunteers.
- One year of experience providing excellent customer service, and ability to communicate information clearly in written and oral styles. Proficient computer skills including competence in MS Word, Excel, MS Outlook, and SharePoint.
- Willingness and ability to learn and work in new data bases, such as Active Net and ODES.
- Candidates must possess the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple tasks, changing priorities and attention to detail with excellent organizational skills. Meet deadlines.
- Experience in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Candidate should possess the ability to work effectively as a team member and excellent problem-solving skills.
- Ability to drive a 14 passenger van.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends periodically, and shifts longer than 8 hours periodically.
- Experience making marketing and promotional materials.
