Job Description :

The Competitive Sports Assistant Director is an experienced leader for large, complex and diverse noncredited recreational or sports program(s). Assists in the design, creation, implementation and instruction of recreational programs for participants of all ages and may serve as a lead or mentor for other program instructors. Required to demonstrate considerable discretion, initiative and independence to resolve issues and perform other duties as assigned.

The Competitive Sports Assistant Director will be responsible for the program management of assigned sports clubs and intramural sports operations including policy development and implementation. Coordinate and administer all the program's schedules for facility usage and with other department and university activities. Work in close collaboration with Recreation's Events, Operations and Fiscal teams. Conduct all aspects of the Greek Sports contract program including By-Law development and revisions; train and advise college representatives and event management.

The Competitive Sports Assistant Director makes and provides programmatic and budgetary recommendations. Responsible for the administration of program budgets and inventory management and controls of equipment and other department resources. Coordinate the oversight of all risk management components for the Sports clubs and Intramural clubs. Works with the Marketing Director to make contributions as it relates to communication strategies.

The Competitive Sports Assistant Director provides work direction and supervision for contract staff, paid coaches (~10), and staff volunteers. Participates in hiring and is responsible for training and development of program area students, IM Officials (~40), Sports Club Officers, and Sports Club Volunteers (~20). Provide assistance at other Recreation Department special events and activities and makes presentations to groups on campus to promote the Recreation Department and the Competitive Sports program, as needed.

  • Strong proficiency in the use of basic computer applications relevant to job duties.

  • Thorough knowledge of campus policies and procedures. Knowledge of campus and department risk management policies as they relate to Competitive Sports. Proven ability to plan for and manage crisis situations. Proven ability to train others for such situations.

  • Thorough knowledge of program activity and industry best practices. Intramural Sports - Knowledge of rules of play for a wide variety of intramural sports. Demonstrated instructional skills in the teaching of sports officiating mechanics and techniques for mainstream intramural team sports (including but not limited to - flag football, basketball, softball, volleyball, soccer, and innertube water polo). Knowledge of tournament and competition formats; ability to schedule officials and supervisors to ensure adequate program coverage. Sports Clubs -Knowledge of a wide variety of sports and recreational activities, including familiarity with their related equipment, space, travel requirements, and coordination between other university departments.

  • Skills to develop original ideas, creative problem solving skills in a varied and challenging environment including service orientation, program management, sound judgment and decision-making, and critical thinking skills.

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization. Demonstrated supervisory skills, including the ability to effectively train, supervise and evaluate student employees. Demonstrated ability to transfer motivational impetus to all supervised personnel.

  • Ability to work in youth camps, fitness and outdoor programs.

  • Specialized knowledge of program activity and industry best practices. Demonstrated background in the development and management of a large, diverse Competitive Sports program in a university setting. Skill in balancing the programmatic needs and desires of Competitive Sports programs and participants as they relate to the fulfillment of the university's mission.

  • Strong marketing, promotional, publicity and public relations skills. Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all directed and indirect campus contacts and representatives.

  • Knowledge of local, regional, and national organizations and programs as they relate to current and planned programs

  • Demonstrated knowledge of UC and department policies and procedures in the areas of student personnel, timekeeping, purchasing, equipment inventory, and business practices; ability to interpret and apply these at the program level

  • Knowledge of sound financial principles; ability to manage a program funded by and limited by student fees and donor guidelines.

  • Experience with student leadership guidance including but not limited to advising and developing experience in program planning, budget implementation and evaluation. Ability to assess the needs of students with respect to leadership development.

  • Experience with risk management concepts as they relate to sports clubs including staffing, transportation, practices and related events in an academic setting.

  • Service orientation, program management, sound judgment and decision-making, critical thinking, development of original ideas, and creative problem solving skills.

  • Leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally. Excellent interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to appropriately exercise independent judgment, initiative, tact, diplomacy and patience, and to successfully interact with diverse student, staff, academic and public populations, on the telephone and in person.

  • Proven ability to plan and implement program activities and special events. Creativity in the development and perseverance in initiating, implementing and completing these programs.

  • Knowledge of campus facilities, their size, location, manner of scheduling, and needed maintenance and equipment.

  • Mandated Reporter: This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

  • Must possess a valid driver's License, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
