The therapist provides patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification, registration, and/or assessed competencies. Practice will be in accordance with laws, regulations, and established policies, procedures, and practice guidelines. The therapist delivers a prescribed and planned course of radiation therapy using radiation therapy equipment according to established practices and standards. They obtain patient history, answer patient questions, and explain procedures. The therapist observes patients for any unusual reactions or events during treatment. They follow established departmental and hospital policies, procedures, and objectives. Scheduling patients for treatments is part of their responsibility. They interface with physicists at the initiation of treatments and consult with supportive care physicians, nurses, and social workers. It is their duty to check prescriptions, diagnoses, charts, and patient identification to ensure accurate treatments. The therapist prepares electronic and/or written documentation as required by the profession. They prepare the room and equipment for patients and transfer immobilized patients with special care. Positioning patients in prescribed anatomical positions for treatment is a key responsibility. The therapist reinforces recommendations given to patients by physicians and other care providers. They perform verification and port film exposures for all treated areas and make corrections to therapy as directed by the physician. Enhancing professional growth and development through participation in education programs and workshops is encouraged. Miscellaneous job-related duties may be assigned as needed. Physical demands include exerting up to 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10-25 pounds of force frequently. Psychological capabilities include analytical abilities, memory, problem-solving, and creativity. Communication and collaboration with co-workers, physicians, and patients are essential. Time management and prioritizing skills are required. Cognitive skills must include persuasiveness and judgment. No special environmental or protective equipment considerations are noted.
