Public Safety Dispatcher

The UCLA Police Department is a leader in providing progressive law enforcement services to a culturally diverse urban campus and its surrounding community. We are dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment for teaching, research and public service. We do this through patrol, rapid response to calls for service, investigations, education and implementation of preventative strategies. Our work, grounded in a community policing philosophy, utilizes campus partnerships as the most effective approach for insuring a safe campus. Position Summary The Public Safety Dispatcher provides dispatching services during emergency and routine assignments. The Communications Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with scheduled shift rotations every 6 months. Daily duties include but are not limited to the following: Receive and relay emergency and nonemergency calls for assistance via telephone, radio and computer terminals Answer and/or redirect calls for information Prioritize and dispatch emergency calls for police, fire, medical aid, hazardous materials and allied agencies Monitor, acknowledge and input computerized alarm data for intrusion, robbery, fire, unknown trouble and facilities alarm systems Operate, update, and maintain computer terminals, including computer-aided dispatch and National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System, based on officer requests Dispatch units, such as police, fire, medial aid, security, parking enforcement and facilities, utilizing two-way radio systems For lateral candidates with one year or more of recent experience in a 9-1-1 emergency dispatching center for fire or police, the department may consider waiving the online job-related skills assessment test portion of the examination process. All other interested candidates will be invited to participate in the complete process. The selection process consists of an online job-related skills assessment test that includes a typing test, oral interview, medical and psychological examinations, and a thorough background investigation. Salary & Compensation UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications Minimum qualifications for Public Safety Dispatcher include satisfactory completion of a POST-certified, 120-hour Basic Public Safety Dispatcher course within 12 months of the date of hire; undergo a thorough background investigation; an evaluation of oral communication skills; the completion of 12 months' probation; and the completion of a medical examination. Ability to prioritize and route multiple telephone calls of various importance, often simultaneously. Ability to maintain equanimity in difficult situations and with hostile members of the community. Skill in speaking clearly and distinctly, using correct English to communicate with public and department personnel in a concise and informative manner. Ability to operate a computer terminal which utilizes California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System and maintain security of same. Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation. Live Scan Background Check: A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment. Age Requirement: Candidate(s) must be 18 years or older to be eligible to be hired. Pre-Placement Physical: Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory physical examination. Driving Record: The position is subject to the California DMV Pull Notice System and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record. Reading Comprehension Test: A reading assessment will be conducted. CANRA: The position is designated as a mandatory reporter under CANRA.
