The Position

The Recreation Coordinator I, under the general direction of the Recreation Supervisor, will perform duties as a Production Manager for the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District's Theatre Arts program. Responsibilities include scheduling and managing pre-production timelines and production schedules; overseeing recruitment and management of hourly and contract production crew; overseeing the realization of physical production elements; supporting and liaising with production creative teams; quality control of all production aspects; managing in-house technical staff; planning and realizing productions within budget; creating detailed production schedules; ensuring adherence to schedules and deadlines; organizing and leading production meetings. The Recreation Coordinator I (Production Manager) reports to the Recreation Supervisor of the Theatre Program.

Minimum Qualifications

Entrance requirements for the examination are competitive and possession of these does not guarantee a spot on the eligibility list. Performance will be judged in comparison to other candidates.

The applicant must meet the following:

  • Graduation from a recognized college or university with an Associate of Arts Degree in Recreation or a closely related field, or two years of college study in recreation or a related field; AND
  • One year of full-time or part-time paid experience as a Recreation Leader. Additional qualifying experience may substitute for education on a year-to-year basis.
Knowledge and Abilities

The examination will assess knowledge of recreation programs including Theatre Arts, special events, facility management, scheduling, staff training, supervision, record maintenance, and principles of theatre administration and craft departments. Ability to plan, organize, market, and implement recreation programs; prepare budgets; communicate effectively with the public and community groups.

Examination Components

The exam includes:

  • Application screening to verify minimum requirements.
  • Review of applications and supplemental questionnaires to select the most qualified candidates.
  • A job-related oral interview (weighted 100%), possibly including a performance test.
  • Candidates must pass each portion. The District reserves the right to modify examination steps.
