Description

The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) is currently accepting applications for a provisional appointment to the position of Public Affairs Assistant within the Communications Division. This recruitment is anticipated to close on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at 11:59 PM.

About The Position

Under the direction of the Public Information Officer, the Public Affairs Assistant will support a wide range of communications efforts. Key responsibilities include drafting and distributing press releases and media advisories, developing social media content, assisting with internal communications, monitoring news coverage, coordinating press conferences and community events, and maintaining media contact databases and archives.

The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of public communications, media relations best practices, and a strong interest in serving the community through effective information sharing.

The Long Beach Police Department is the second largest municipal police agency in Los Angeles County and provides law enforcement services to the 7th largest city in California. LBPD is dedicated to professional, proactive, and innovative policing and fostering positive community relationships.

This is a provisional opportunity. All provisional appointments are temporary until a permanent list is available. Provisional appointments are valid for 150 days unless extended and approved. To be considered for a permanent position, candidates must go through the Civil Service exam process. If not selected permanently, provisional appointments will be terminated. City Employees with permanent status in another classification will be reinstated after provisional appointment.

The selected candidate will be required to pass a thorough background investigation.

Examples of Duties

This position reports to the Executive Communications Officer and performs duties related to public affairs, including responding to media inquiries, coordinating community events, supporting city branding initiatives, and managing social media content. The role also involves producing literature, promotional materials, and technical publications, and may oversee department internet and social media content. Additionally, it may include coordinating personnel and volunteer activities and acting as a liaison with the community and other city departments.

Requirements To FileEducation
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Administration, Public Relations, or a related field. Experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
Experience
  • Two years of full-time experience in public affairs/public information.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience in public affairs, media relations, or community engagement, preferably in government or law enforcement.
  • Knowledge of public records laws, media relations guidelines, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Experience creating social media content, newsletters, press releases, or public presentations.
  • Proficiency with social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, Nextdoor).
