Description
Under the direction of a supervisory official in a State department or agency, conducts and supervises the performance of professional staff engaged in the highly complex field and office work pertaining to sub-surface investigations of abandoned hard rock mines, soil compaction, mineral resources, and other related geological work; supervises and reviews the collection and analyses of highly complex geological and geotechnical data; coordinates and supervises geological projects involving full responsibility for planning, scientific research, recommendations, and implementation for all phases of projects. Analyzes the soils design work for roadways and pavements; does other related work as required.
Specific to the Position
The State of New Jersey is seeking a highly skilled individual to lead abandoned hard rock mine investigations and reclamation projects throughout the state. Selected applicant will work with staff from the NJ Department of Transportation, the NJ Department of Labor & Workforce Development, and the NJ Department of Environmental Protection to address multiple priority sites. Individuals should have documented proficiency with the research of historic mining activities, mapping the extent of individual mines using geophysical, drilling, and other exploratory techniques, the development of remediation plans, and management of successful reclamation projects. Experience with budgeting, project and contract management, and contractor oversight is required. Field work and travel is required.
Preferred Skill Set
Preference will be given to applicants with the Professional Engineer license or Professional Geologist license. Applicants who have experience working with northeast hard rock abandoned mines.
Requirements
EDUCATION: Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in geology, geophysics, mining, geologic engineering, or in a discipline appropriate to the position.
EXPERIENCE: Ten (10) years of experience in a field appropriate to the position. One (1) year of supervisory experience and demonstrated expertise in contract administration and budget management.
NOTE: Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.

License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.
