ABOUT THE POSITION

The Program Manager, Government Initiatives, will play a critical role in the success of our government partnerships, ensuring that information flows seamlessly between our internal teams and external government partners. This position requires a candidate who has significant experience working directly with government agencies and an understanding of the complexities of public sector reporting, compliance, and communication.

In this position, the Program Manager will serve as a liaison between the organization and our government partners. You will be responsible for collecting and managing data across multiple departments, synthesizing it into clear and actionable insights, and presenting it to both senior leadership and government stakeholders. You will also be responsible for ensuring that all information provided to government partners is accurate, timely, and compliant with all regulatory and reporting requirements, while being accountable for ensuring government partners have a positive and productive experience working with Undue.

Additionally, you will monitor press and media coverage related to our government initiatives, providing strategic guidance to both senior leadership and communications teams to ensure the organization's messaging remains consistent and aligned with our goals.

This is a high-visibility position that will require a combination of strategic thinking, strong communication skills, and an ability to manage complex relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate will thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and possess a proven track record of successfully managing government-related initiatives and partnerships.

While the preferred location for this role is either New Orleans, LA or New York City, NY, we are open to considering exceptional candidates based in other locations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Government Partner Relations and Reporting:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for government partners, ensuring timely, accurate, and transparent reporting on government initiatives and outcomes.
  • Provide senior leadership with detailed, data-driven reports on government partnerships, progress toward strategic goals, and key performance metrics.
  • Ensure compliance with reporting requirements for government stakeholders and proactively address any information gaps or discrepancies.

Data Collection & Integration:

  • Collect, integrate, and organize data from multiple departments to ensure comprehensive reporting on government-related programs and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to streamline data collection processes, ensuring accuracy and alignment with government needs and expectations.

Press and Communications Monitoring:

  • Collaborate with the communications team to support the drafting of high-quality responses to public inquiries, press releases, and media relations within the context of government partnerships.

Strategic Oversight & Management:

  • Oversee the ongoing monitoring and evaluation of government programs, ensuring that all initiatives are in compliance with government regulations and organizational goals.
  • Work closely with senior leadership to ensure government initiatives align with broader organizational strategies and objectives.
  • Provide insights and recommendations based on data analysis to optimize government relationships, policy engagement, and program performance. Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform other tasks as may be assigned by management or supervisors from time to time
  • Adhere to the organization's conflict of interest and code of ethics policies

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Government Relations, Business Administration, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience working directly with government agencies, public sector programs, or government relations in a nonprofit or similar environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex programs with government stakeholders, including tracking and reporting on government contracts or initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of governmental processes, regulations, and reporting requirements.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with experience presenting to both internal leadership and external government partners.
  • Proficiency in data management tools (Excel, Tableau, Power BI, or similar) and business intelligence platforms.
  • Knowledge of healthcare policy or public health initiatives is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with press relations and media monitoring is a plus
  • Experience working with federal, state, and local government agencies in a regulatory or policy capacity.
  • Proven ability to navigate the complexities of government funding, compliance, and reporting standards.
  • Experience with crisis communications, media relations, or managing public perception of government initiatives.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative, transparent work environment in which providing and receiving feedback is common practice.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills; comfortable in an external facing role; creative and innovative.
  • Excellent and compelling verbal and written communication skills; high attention to detail and follow-up, and
  • excellent organizational skills.
  • Meticulous project management skills and ability to plan, prioritize and organize a diversified workload; must
  • Ability to receive, prioritize, and follow up on requests from various stakeholders.
  • Keen analytical skills.
  • An exceptional work ethic and track record of personal initiative; collegial and collaborative.

Undue Medical Debt (formerly RIP Medical Debt), (“Undue”) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose purpose is to strengthen communities by erasing financially burdensome medical debt. Founded in 2014, Undue is a unique nonprofit that's pioneered medical debt relief at scale for those least able to pay, across the U.S. We work tirelessly to end medical debt and ensure a future where everyone can access healthcare without fear.

How does it work? Undue utilizes donations to buy large bundles of medical debt and then relieves that debt with no tax consequences to recipients. The results have been spectacular— more than $14 billion in medical debts eradicated so far, providing financial relief for over 9 million individuals and families. We strive to be a source of justice in an unjust healthcare finance system; an innovative solution for patient-centered healthcare providers; and a moral force for systemic change. Recently featured on NPR, the organization proudly received transformative gifts from MacKenzie Scott, a historic grant from New York City, and recognition from many other notable campaigns. The organization currently manages more than twenty government contracts.

Undue's offices are located in Long Island City, NY, just minutes from Manhattan, conveniently located steps away from many major subway lines. The team has implemented and fully embraced a hybrid work environment, working from the office only 3 days per week. This position would also be available to remote candidates located between the MT and ET zones.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Base annual salary $70,000-$105,000 for candidates located in the NYC area, commensurate with experience.
  • Hybrid work environment (office work 3 days a week).
