POSITION DESCRIPTION – Production Operator

Job Title: Mixer Operator/Packaging Line Operator Department: Production

Classification: Hourly/non-exempt Salary: $21 - $24 per hour (pending experience)

General Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Production Supervisor and Production Work leader this position exists to manufacture various in-process/finished goods through the mixing of various raw materials as specified on batch cards / formula sheets as well as operating packaging equipment to package finished goods produced in the facility.

Principle Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Follows all plant policies and practices to ensure safety, quality, service, and cost objectives are met. Practice continuous quality improvement in all processes. Fully supports Bostik's goal of zero workplace safety incidents and supports and participates in Bostik's EHS Programs.

  • Operates a variety of mixing / blending equipment / packaging equipment / forklift; performs various quality checks and assists in the cleaning and changeover of equipment. Makes adjustments to equipment as needed to keep equipment operating.

  • Assists in maintaining an accurate inventory through activities such as: proper reporting of material usage, minimizing wastes, and ensuring that measuring devices are properly calibrated and using proper measuring techniques.

  • Reports any spills or unique situations that adversely impact safety or the environment.

  • Assists in maintaining an acceptable level of housekeeping.

  • Completes all required paperwork accurately.

  • Assists in physical inventories.

  • Works in other areas as needed.

    • Other Duties:

  • Actively participates in various committees/teams to improve processes.
  • Assists in other areas as required by business needs.
  • Supports the facility's on-going Quality efforts by following all procedures, recommending corrective actions and process improvements, and bringing non-conformities to the attention of the appropriate personnel.

    • Reporting Relationships:

    Direct report to shift supervisor /work leader and Production Manager (if applicable). No direct reports.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

    • High School diploma, or GED.

    • Ability to read and write English.

    • Demonstrated computer skills (Microsoft, SAP).

    • Forklift operation experience preferred

    • 1 -3 years in a manufacturing environment – preferred

  • Knowledge - understanding of production/operations; knowledge of Bostik products; be able to read, understand and follow formula / batch cards / procedures; basic math skills (counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Basic knowledge of equipment; ability to make adjustments as necessary to keep equipment operating.
  • Logical Reasoning - employee must understand how his/her actions/lack of action impacts our ability to maintain a safe work place, provide quality products, maintain costs, and service customers. Must understand the importance of reporting all incidents related to safety and to the environment.
  • Planning/Organizing - employee will, under limited supervision of the shift supervisor and work leader (if applicable), perform various tasks which employee will need to complete in a logical and efficient manner; will need to organize work area for maximum safety and efficiency; foresee potential items that would cause accidents, spills, or downtime and proactively address.
  • Decision making - employee will make decisions that affect his/her personal safety, risk to the environment and the quality of our products which, in turn impacts service to our customers. Must know when to go to higher authority for authorization or when uncertain about a situation / issue.
  • Interpersonal skills - employee must work cooperatively with other line operators, forklift drivers, temporaries, other employees, plant management, and vendors when applicable. Complaint resolution procedure to be followed in resolving issues.
  • Communication skills - employee must communicate effectively with co-workers and with work leaders/supervisors/plant management. Must resolve conflict in acceptable manner.

    • Physical Requirements

  • Average hours per week: 40 plus OT as needed Core Hours: Set Shift Times.

  • Shift work: Must be flexible to provide coverage for all shifts if needed.

  • Types of machines/equipment: mixers, blenders, pumps, valves, packaging equipment, forklift, labeling equipment, hand tools.

  • Vehicles/moving equipment: forklift / pallet jack

  • Time spent/day: Standing = 75% Walking = 10% Sitting = 5% Driving = 10%

  • Work is: Inside = 95% Outside = 5%

  • PPE required & Physical Demands:

    • Safety Shoes as required by plant safety rules

    • Safety Glasses as required by plant safety rules

    • Hearing Protection as required by plant safety rules

    • Respirator As required by MSDS and if on Spill Response Team

    • Gloves As required by MSDS and Plant Safety Rules

    • Goggles/face shield N/A (unless required by MSDS)

    • Protective clothing N/A (unless required by MSDS)

    • Twist at waist often

    • Stoop/bend often

    • Kneeling occasionally

    • Climb ladders occasionally

    • Climb stairs often

    • Work alone occasionally – will work without direct supervision often

    • Walking 10 – 20 % of day
