Role Overview: This laboratory-based role involves leading the development of advanced mammalian cell culture and bacterial fermentation processes for protein production in Vaccines Early Bioprocess Development (EBPD). The incumbent will oversee the design, planning, and execution of cell/bacterial culture process development experiments, requiring proven expertise in media optimization, recombinant protein expression, and upstream process development. Responsibilities include developing and optimizing media and upstream processes in bioreactors to improve growth, yield, and quality, with essential experience in AMBR250/bioreactor/WAVE systems. The role demands understanding of scale-up, GMP considerations, meticulous documentation, and effective data presentation, coupled with proven leadership skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership to the upstream process development team within Vaccines EBPD.
  • Design, plan, execute, document, and present complex experiments to optimize protein production in bacterial and mammalian cultures, especially using bioreactors and DOE methodologies.
  • Evaluate and incorporate host cell selection, media, and feeds to enhance process performance.
  • Streamline processes to improve efficiency and reduce costs, proposing scientific solutions and insights.
  • Lead technology transfer initiatives, authoring necessary documentation.
  • Represent the process development group in project meetings, maintaining detailed records and collaborating across departments.
  • Evaluate and adopt new technologies to improve process capabilities, staying abreast of scientific advancements through seminars and reviews.
  • Qualifications:

    Must Have:

    • Ph.D. in relevant fields with a minimum of 5 years industry experience, or MS with 9 years, or BS with 10 years of experience.
    • Strong background in cell biology, biochemistry, biochemical engineering, and cell culture techniques, including high-throughput technology.
    • Extensive experience with small and large-scale mammalian cell culture using bioreactors/WAVE.
    • Experience with DOE and statistical data analysis.
    • Knowledge of QbD principles and process development.

    Nice to Have:

    • Experience with advanced technologies like perfusion, iCELLis, continuous processing.
    • Expertise in media development, cell metabolism, big data analysis, and regulatory requirements.
    • Experience with CMC drug development, tech transfer, PPQ/CPV, downstream purification, and protein characterization.

    Physical and Mental Requirements:

    • Ability to perform lab experiments safely, including standing, sitting, lifting, and bending.
    • Capability of aseptic transfers, lifting up to 50 lbs, and performing equipment operations.
    • Strong scientific judgment, data analysis skills, and detailed understanding of the subject matter.

    Work Schedule and Other Details:

    • May require irregular hours, including weekends.
    • Relocation support available; on-premise work location.
