Job Summary

This is a pool posting for future vacancies in this job classification. This is a two-year limited term appointment. Continuation of employment will be contingent upon the availability of funding.

Location: Huntsville, AL

The Auburn University Huntsville Research Center (AUHRC) and the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering are seeking candidates for multiple positions of Principal Research Scientist / Engineer VI / VII, anticipating contract funding in various engineering and science fields such as modeling and simulation, systems engineering, cyber security, critical infrastructure protection, advanced manufacturing, additive manufacturing, materials science, navigation and timing, propulsion systems, and project management. These roles will be based in Huntsville, Alabama, reporting to the Associate Dean for Research, College of Engineering. Candidates may collaborate with units like Auburn's McCrary Institute, Cyber Research Center, National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence, and the Huntsville Research Center to develop research sponsorships in strategic areas.

Responsibilities include providing technical expertise to government and industry sponsors, supporting activities like:

  • Offering Subject Matter Expertise on cyber security threats and mitigation strategies.
  • Protecting critical infrastructure systems (energy, water, transportation, etc.).
  • Supporting modeling, simulation, and systems engineering projects.
  • Providing expertise in additive manufacturing, advanced manufacturing, and materials.
  • Advising on vehicle dynamics and navigation systems.
  • Collaborating with NASA and industry on payload integration, launch vehicles, and exploration programs.
  • Engaging with industry, government, and academia on policy and technology issues affecting defense, aerospace, and manufacturing sectors.

Essential Functions include conducting research, managing contracts, developing proposals and budgets, fostering research partnerships, and building research funding. The role may involve supervising employees through training, mentoring, and evaluations.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD in engineering, science, MIS, or related field from an accredited institution. Experience levels vary from none (Level I) to 12 years (Level VII), with relevant experience in engineering, research, or science-based programs. Candidates with a Bachelor's or Master's degree may substitute experience at a rate of two years per year of education.

Minimum Skills, Licenses, and Certifications

Knowledge of contracts, grants, budgeting, and finance; technical expertise in systems engineering or cyber security; and relevant professional experience.

Desired Qualifications

Extensive experience with government or industry projects, strategic partnership development, and excellent interpersonal skills.
