Role: Principal Software Engineer, Edge Delivery

The Edge Delivery team maintains Varnish, Fastly's core caching platform, and develops scalable services using C and Rust. The role involves hands-on coding, designing system improvements, and providing technical leadership across teams.

Responsibilities:

• Develop in C and Rust to meet diverse customer needs
• Enhance HTTP support, caching, and customer logic in Varnish
• Lead full lifecycle projects and communicate progress
• Coordinate with team members and cross-functional teams
• Address performance, correctness, and stability issues
• Participate in code reviews and process improvements
• Mentor engineers and foster knowledge sharing
• Participate in on-call rotations

Qualifications:

• Minimum 10 years of software engineering experience, 5+ in networked/distributed/cloud systems
• At least 3 years with C or Rust
• Experience with incident response and automation
• Demonstrable experience is sufficient; CS degree not required

Preferred Skills:

• Security in multi-tenant systems
• Python scripting
• Technical writing
• Experience with high-performance web services like Varnish, nginx, Apache Traffic Server
• Mentoring and cross-department collaboration

Work Details:

• Core hours with occasional nights/weekends for on-call
• Hybrid/remote options; preferred locations: San Francisco, NY, Denver

Compensation & Benefits:

Salary range: $228,280 - $273,936, with potential equity and bonuses. Benefits include health coverage, flexible vacation, paid holidays, wellness days, 401(k), and employee stock purchase plan.
