Job Number: 101577

Location: San Diego,US

Job Description

We seek an outstanding postdoctoral candidate to join the Hueschen Lab at the University of California, San Diego. We are an interdisciplinary group at the interface of biophysics, cell biology, and infection biology. Put simply, our favorite questions are: how do parasitic cells and animals move, penetrate tissue, and change shape? We use microscopy and quantitative analysis, experimental approaches from cell and parasite biology, and physical and mathematical thinking. Current topics of interest include the dynamics and patterning of cytoskeletal proteinsinside the parasitic protistToxoplasma gondii, mechanisms ofcell gliding motility, the mechanics ofvasculature invasionby human parasites, and the mechanics ofmorphogenesisin the parasitic flatwormSchistosoma mansoni. Additional information:[Please click the Apply button for the link or email].

The Hueschen Lab is part of the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at UCSD and affiliated with UCSD Biological Physics. We enjoy a vibrant, deeply collegial research community with many opportunities for interaction and collaboration across the Biological Sciences departments, Physics, Health Sciences, and Bioengineering. Postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to attend our many seminar series and informal community events, present their work at departmental gatherings, and make full use of campus resources such as career development workshops and world-class shared research facilities.

Qualifications.Candidates should have received or expect to receive a PhD in biology, physics, bioengineering, or a related field, preferably with a conferral date on or after 2024. Ideal candidates include those with training in (1) Toxoplasma gondiigenetics or molecular / cell biology; (2) microfluidics and/or bioengineered vasculature or other organoid models; (3)Schistosomabiology; or (4) advanced fluorescence microscopy. More importantly, we seek driven individuals who are open to the challenge of crossing disciplinary boundaries and who will enjoy being a part of an interactive and supportive team.

To apply. Please email Dr. Christina Hueschen ([Please click the Apply button for the link or email]) with the subject line “Postdoc Application” and include:

  • A cover letter or email that summarizes your experience, contributions to science, and your research interests – and explains how these interests align with the Hueschen Lab's work.
  • CV with publication list.
  • PDF copies of your 1-2 most significant publications or pre-prints.
  • Names and contact information of 3 references.

It is an incredibly exciting time to work at the interface of biology and physics, applying new tools and approaches to understudied organisms that are major players in the global disease landscape (schistosomiasis, malaria). We hope that you'll join the adventure!
